Bharti Airtel has officially crossed the 650 million customer milestone across its global operations. According to recent data from GSMA Intelligence, this achievement solidifies Airtel’s position as the second-largest telecommunications operator worldwide by mobile customer base.
The company’s sustained growth in global rankings is supported by its dual-market focus in India and Africa, alongside an expanding portfolio of digital, financial, and enterprise services.
Operations and Infrastructure in India
In its domestic market of India, Bharti Airtel currently serves over 368 million mobile customers. The company has actively expanded its network capabilities, notably becoming the first operator to launch 5G Plus services in the region. This 5G infrastructure now serves as the foundation for a converged digital ecosystem, which includes Xstream AirFiber (Fixed Wireless Access) and integrated IPTV services.
Beyond mobile, Airtel’s fixed-line and broadcast divisions provide high-speed internet to over 13 million homes and direct-to-home services to more than 15 million Digital TV subscribers. To address consumer security, the company also recently deployed a network-based AI spam protection solution.
On the enterprise front, Airtel Business provides structural solutions to corporate clients, encompassing cloud services, cybersecurity, SD-WAN, IoT, and secure connectivity, including Airtel IQ. This B2B infrastructure is supported by an extensive network of over 400,000 route kilometers of subsea fiber and Nxtra’s green data centers, designed to handle increasing AI and digital workloads.
Additionally, Airtel has expanded into the financial sector, announcing a foray into the Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) space to offer personalized credit and financial products through its mobile application.
Airtel Africa and Financial Inclusion
Airtel’s operations in Africa span 14 countries, serving a customer base of over 179 million. The African division focuses on providing integrated mobile voice, high-speed data, and international roaming services.
A central component of Airtel Africa’s regional strategy is Airtel Money, a mobile financial platform that currently serves over 52 million users. This service plays a significant role in expanding financial inclusion across the continent, providing digital banking and instant payment solutions to populations that previously lacked access to traditional banking infrastructure.
Global Space and Satellite Connectivity
Beyond traditional terrestrial networks, Bharti Airtel is expanding its reach into satellite communications to address the digital divide in remote areas. Through strategic partnerships with Eutelsat OneWeb and SpaceX, the company is utilizing Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations. This initiative aims to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband connectivity to isolated rural areas, as well as the maritime and aviation sectors.
Commenting on this milestone, Gopal Vittal, Executive Vice Chairman, Bharti Airtel, said:
Achieving the milestone of 650 million customers to be the second largest operator globally is a great responsibility for us to serve our customers better every day. This is why we invest in state-of-the-art technologies to not only provide connectivity but to also deliver a safe network.
Our purpose is clear: as we deepen and expand our presence, we will strive to raise the bar on innovation, reliability, and experience so that every customer interaction is an opportunity to earn trust and deliver value connection.
