Apple iPhone roadmap reveals 7 models by fall 2027

Apple is developing at least eight new iPhone models set for release between 2026 and 2027, according to a report from The Information. The lineup includes Apple’s first foldable iPhone, a redesigned 20th-anniversary edition, updated Pro and budget devices, and changes to release timing and manufacturing locations.

People working directly on the projects at Apple and its suppliers say the company could be selling up to seven iPhone models by fall 2027, compared with five currently.

Background

The iPhone contributes nearly half of Apple’s total revenue. Growth slowed in recent years as users kept devices longer. In Apple’s most recent fiscal year, which ended September 27, iPhone revenue rose 4% year over year to over $209 billion, boosted in part by the iPhone 17 lineup, which introduced more noticeable design changes than the previous generation.

Upcoming iPhone models (2026–2027)

Apple plans multiple updates across its budget, base, Pro, Air, and foldable lines.

iPhone 17e – Internally called iPhone 17e, this budget model is expected in Spring 2026 (V159). Features include a glass back, magnetic wireless charging, and Apple’s in-house C1X modem.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max – Scheduled for Fall 2026 (V63, V64), these models will have Face ID under the display using OTI Lumionics materials, a relocated selfie camera, a mechanical aperture on at least one rear camera, a new low-light camera sensor, and a similar external design to iPhone 17 Pro. Apple will also use Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module packaging from TSMC to place memory closer to the processor for faster AI.

iPhone Fold – Apple’s first foldable device (V68), internally known as iPhone Fold, is planned for Fall 2026. It will feature a landscape-oriented design similar to large iPads, a ~5.3-inch outer display, a ~7.7-inch inner display, and a top-left selfie camera with light and proximity sensors. Materials come from Corning and Schott, with Lens Technology and Biel Crystal providing layered components. Foxconn in Guanlan, China, is leading trial production, with current display defect rates reported as high.

iPhone 18 and 18e – Base and budget models for Spring 2027. iPhone 18 (V67) removes haptic feedback and touch sensing from the capture button and will be manufactured first at Foxconn’s Bangalore facility before China. iPhone 18e (V69) supports magnetic wireless charging and will also start production in India.

iPhone Air 2 – Internally, iPhone Air 2 (V62) had trial production paused due to weak sales of the first model. Redesign includes adding a second rear camera and lowering pricing. Production is expected to restart as early as March at Luxshare in Kunshan, China.

iPhone 20 – Marking the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, the V72 model (internally called iPhone 20) is planned for Fall 2027. It will have curved glass on the front, back, and edges, a full edge-to-edge display with no cutouts, a narrow metal band around the midpoint for buttons, and an under-display selfie camera.

Outlook

Apple expects strong performance in its current quarter, driven by solid sales of this year’s iPhone models, excluding the iPhone Air. The iPhone continues to account for about half of Apple’s total revenue.

Despite challenges related to artificial intelligence, spatial computing, and competition in key markets, Apple remains reliant on the iPhone to support overall growth. The expanded iPhone lineup planned for 2026 and 2027 is intended to sustain momentum while the company addresses longer-term strategic pressures.
