OnePlus 15 design, build detailed ahead of launch

OnePlus has revealed the design philosophy for its upcoming flagship, the OnePlus 15, centered around what the company terms a “Dune Aesthetic” ahead of the official launch in October. This new approach emphasizes minimalist design, advanced materials, and ergonomic comfort.

The front of the device is characterized by a display with ultra-narrow 1.15mm equilateral bezels and a slim chin, designed to maximize the screen-to-body ratio for a more immersive user experience.

The phone’s chassis incorporates an aerospace-grade “nano-ceramic metal” midframe. OnePlus highlights this new material as a significant advancement, stating it is 26.3% lighter than titanium, offers 134% greater wear resistance than titanium metal surfaces, and provides 26.6 times better heat dissipation than titanium with improved heat dissipation. The manufacturing involves advanced processes, including three leading technologies:

  • Micro arc oxidation process: This military-grade process significantly enhances durability, making the surface 134% harder than titanium surface, 223% harder than stainless steel surface, and 344% harder than anode aluminum alloy.
  • Ion coloring process: Ensures the device’s color is not easy to fade, maintaining its aesthetic over time.
  • Nanoscale sealing process: Provides robust protection, evidenced by 336 hours of rigorous salt spray corrosion resistance testing.

These processes refine every detail for strength and longevity. The frame features slightly curved edges and large, rounded corners, a combination intended to provide a comfortable and secure grip for one-handed operation.

Aesthetically, the OnePlus 15 introduces several unique textural elements. The surface features a “Quenching Texture” for a subtle, refined look. The device will be available in a new “Sand Dune” colorway, a meticulously selected hue aimed at conveying elegance. The finish is described as having a novel “Ice Skin” feel, which is engineered to be cool and pleasant against the skin from the first touch.

On the rear, the camera module is housed in an “Ultra-minimalist Camera Deco” lens assembly, designed to integrate seamlessly with the phone’s overall minimalist and quality-focused appearance.

The design of the OnePlus 15 combines six key details: a minimalist camera housing, ultra-narrow bezels, an aerospace-grade metal frame utilizing advanced manufacturing techniques, a unique surface texture, a skin-friendly feel, and ergonomic corners. These elements work together to embody the device’s aesthetic inspiration drawn from the grandeur of sand dunes, said the company.
