Samsung Galaxy A54 5G Unboxing and First Impressions

Samsung launched the Galaxy A54 5G in India today, as the successor to last year’s Galaxy A53. The phone retains the FHD+ Super AMOLED screen with 120Hz refresh rate, IP67 dust and water resistance, and a 5000mAh battery, but it replaces the Exynos 1280 with the latest Exynos 1380 SoC and gets a new 50MP camera. We got to check out the smartphone, here are our first impressions.

  • USB Type-C to C Cable

The A54 5G has a 6.4-inch Full HD+ Infinity-O Super AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, making the phone slightly smaller than the predecessor. Since the screen has up to 1000 nits brightness, a 25% increase compared to the A53, it is bright even in outdoors. The phone has HDR support, which works on YouTube, but doesn’t work on Netflix.

The Galaxy A54 5G is powered by the latest Exynos 1380 5nm SoC with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB storage. The performance is good for daily usage, but the gaming performance is not on par with the Snapdragon 778G. It has support for several 5G bands.

The phone runs Android 13 with One UI 4 on top. Samsung has promised 4 OS updates and 5 years of security updates for the phone. It also has NFC and Knox security.

Inside the tiny punch-hole there is a 32-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture, same as the predecessor. The earpiece grill is on the top edge, which doubles as up as a secondary speaker.

It has an in-display fingerprint scanner, which is quick to unlock the phone, immediately after you keep the finger in the area. There is a small chin below the display.

Coming to the button placements, the power button and the volume rockers are present on the right side. There is nothing on the left side. The primary microphone, USB Type-C port and the loudspeaker grill are on the bottom. The secondary microphone and the hybrid dual SIM slot are on the top. The phone doesn’t have a 3.5mm audio jack. Even though it looks like metal, the sides have a plastic frame.

Compared to quad rear cameras in the A53, the A54 has triple rear cameras without the camera bar that matches with the S23 series and other phones. It has a 50MP main camera with OIS, 12MP ultra-wide camera and a 5MP macro camera. Both the front and rear cameras support up to 4K 30 fps recording, but rear camera stabilization works only in 1080p. Check out some camera samples below.

Compared to the plastic back in the A53, the A54 has a glass back with a glossy finish which attracts fingerprints. The phone also comes in Lime and Graphite colours. It also has IP67 ratings for water resistance. Even though it has a large, 5000mAh battery, the phone weighs 202 grams, which is more than the predecessor since it has a glass back. It has support for 25W fast charging.

The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is priced starting at Rs. 38,999 for the 8GB + 128GB version, compared to the Rs. 35,999 starting price of the same version of the A53 5G. It will be available from Samsung.com, retail stores and select online portals from March 28th with pre-orders starting today. There is Rs. 3000 bank cashback, so the effective starting price is Rs. 35,999.
