India’s first indigenous 5G testbed launched

At the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi launched India’s first indigenous 5G test bed. Talking at the event, he said that this is an important step toward self-reliance in critical and modern technology in the telecom sector.

5G testbed

The 5G testbed has been developed as a multi-institute collaborative project by eight institutes led by IIT Madras that includes IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IISc Bangalore, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER) and Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT).

The testbed facility will be available at 5 different locations and has been set up at a cost of around Rs 220 crore.

5G roll out plans

India plans to hold an auction for 5G spectrum between the months of June and July, and it anticipates making the first 5G call between the months of August and September.

According to a report, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will evaluate all foreign-made network gear for safety procedures from July, so the 5G roll out might be delayed in India.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minster, said:

This is an important step towards self-reliance of critical and modern technology in the telecom sector. I congratulate all the colleagues associated with this project, including the IITs. Also, I invite young colleagues, researchers and companies of the country to use this testing facility to build 5G technology. This is a great opportunity especially for our start ups to test their products.  It will play a big role in bringing 5G technology to the villages of the country.

Connectivity will determine the pace of progress in 21st century India. Therefore connectivity has to be modernized at every level. 5G technology is also going to bring positive changes in the governance of the country, ease of living and ease of doing business. This will boost growth in every sector like agriculture, health, education, infrastructure and logistics. This will also increase convenience and create many employment opportunities. For rapid roll-out of 5G, efforts of both the government and industry are needed.
