OnePlus Z 5G smartphone said to be announced in July [Update: Could be powered by Snapdragon 765G]

Update, 1st May 2020- A new leak suggests that the OnePlus Z 5G will be powered by the Snapdragon 765G Mobile Platform instead of the MediaTek Dimensity 1000L SoC as rumoured earlier. More details should surface in the coming days.

OnePlus announced its latest OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro smartphones at an online event recently as expected, but there was no word on the “Lite” model – OnePlus Z at the event. While it was expected to be unveiled alongside the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, new reports now suggest that the company could announce the OnePlus Z smartphone at a separate event in the coming months.

According to Max J., OnePlus Z is said to be announced in July 2020 and the sketch of the smartphone reveals a centred hole-punch unlike the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro’s top-left punch-hole. Based on previous rumours, the OnePlus Z is said to be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000L 5G chipset and if this turns out to be true, then the OnePlus Z will be the first OnePlus smartphone to be powered by a MediaTek chipset.

Furthermore, it is said to sport a flat display with a noticeable chin at the bottom and curved rear glass. Unlike the 7 Pro/7T Pro models, this device is said to not sport a curved display. The renders also reveal the alert slider and power button to the right, volume rockers to the left, USB Type-C port, and the speaker grille.

Regarding the optics, the renders reveal a triple camera setup housed in a rectangular camera module and according to the images, the OnePlus Z could also feature laser autofocus and a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor. However, the resolution of the cameras is not known yet.

It should be interesting to see what OnePlus has to offer with the OnePlus Z after the company discontinued the mid-range OnePlus X smartphone. We should know more information in the coming days.
