OnePlus 6 dominates Indian premium smartphone segment yet again

Since its inception a few years back, OnePlus has written many success stories, out of it, one that really prevailed over the other is the success of its premium flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 6. In spite of being on sale for just 5 months, OnePlus yet again dominates the premium smartphone segment for the second successive quarter, capturing 30% of the market driven by the strong performance of its OnePlus 6.

According to Counterpoint research, this is nothing but the result of positive word of mouth along with an effective social media strategy in targeting a new user base. In addition to it, the company continues to increase its points of sale by launching its offline and exclusive stores across key cities, in turn helping the brand to reach out to larger user base as well.

The Counterpoint Research’s most recent analysis also added that the Indian smartphone market especially the premium smartphone (>INR 30,000/US$400) shipments reached an all-time third-quarter peak during Q3 2018. This is due to various attractive offers and deals during Flipkart’s ‘Big Billion Day’ and Amazon’s ‘The Great Indian Festival Sale’.

At present, the top three brands, Samsung, OnePlus and Apple contributed to 83% of the overall premium market as compared to 88% a quarter ago.

Moreover, the consumers who tend to upgrade the phones these days give importance to factors like full-screen displays, biometric security, dual-cameras, faster processors and support for artificial intelligence.

Having said that, OnePlus 6 remains the best-selling model in the premium segment followed by the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy A8 Star. Since the launch of the device with an exclusive tie-up with Amazon India, the company’s flagship smartphone has crossed 1 million sales globally within 22 days. It’s also worth mentioning the OnePlus 6 became OnePlus’ fastest selling smartphone since the first OnePlus One smartphone was launched back in 2013.

It’s evident that the user base of OnePlus in India is growing with each and every flagship launch and it is now translating into a record sales. Reiterating the specs sheet, the OnePlus 6 packs a 6.29-inch Optic AMOLED display with a notch, 84% screen-to-body ratio, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, is powered by Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform with up to 8GB of RAM, has a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture, OIS, EIS, 20-megapixel secondary camera with f/1.7 aperture for portrait shots and 2x zoom, 16-megapixel front camera, and it recently got Android 9.0 (Pie) with OxygenOS 9.

In a few days, OnePlus is launching the mid-cycle refresh of OnePlus 6 with some futuristic features including In-display Fingerprint scanner, and much more. The OnePlus 6T has been scheduled for October 29th global launch in New York at 11 AM EDT (8:30 PM IST). In India, the launch of the OnePlus 6T will take place at the KDJW Stadium, inside Indira Gandhi Sports Complex on October 30th.
