Global tablet market continues to decline, and in the third quarter of 2017 (3Q17), it declined 5.4% year over year with total shipments of 40 million units, marking the twelfth consecutive quarter of annual decline, according to the latest report from International Data Corporation (IDC). This is due to growing demand for smartphones, combined with the lengthening replacement cycle of tablets and strengthening position of traditional PCs, said IDC.

IDC Tablet Market Q3 2017

Apple continued to be the lead vendor with a market share of 25.8% followed by Samsung which grabbed 15% share. Even though Apple has posted 11.4% growth, Samsung has seen 7.9% decline. Amazon has grabbed the third spot with 10.9% share and has also seen 38.7% growth due to its low-cost tablets. Huawei has moved from third spot in the last quarter to fourth spot with 7.5% share and Lenovo is tied up at the same spot with 7.4% share.

The report said that growth in the detachable tablet market has been slower than expected as Apple and Microsoft are the only two OEMs offering devices in the category and other PC vendors have convertible PC form factor.
