Samsung is expected to start a new program to sell premium refurbished smartphones, according to a new report from Reuters.

The South Korean smartphone maker will launch the program as early as next year. Samsung will refurbish high-end phones returned to the company by users who signed up for one-year upgrade programs in markets such as South Korea and the United States. The company will then resell these phones at a lower price.

The report did not mention what Samsung will do to refurbish the phones. Also, it is not known how much discount will the company sell these refurbished smartphones and in which markets it will sell them. However, the refurbished phones will be sold to consumers at a lower price.

According to a report, the refurbished phone program will help Samsung to continue posting strong quarter results. Samsung has been facing tough competition from Chinese smartphone makers hence launching the program for refurbished smartphones in emerging markets like India could be beneficial for Samsung to maintain the market share.

Apple already shares refurbished iPhones in the US however, it did not get a permission to sell them in India.
