LG and Samsung said to supply flexible OLED screens for future iPhones

Earlier this month, it was reported that JDI is in talks with Apple to provide OLED displays for iPhones in 2018. Now, a fresh report from Electronic Times citing some unnamed sources (via Reuters) is saying that LG and Samsung will supply organic light emitting diode (OLED) screens for Apple Inc’s iPhones.

The OLED panels are rumored to be included with iPhones starting in 2018. LG and Samsung are expected to invest 15 trillion Korean won ($12.8 billion) to expand their display production capacity. LG is expected to shift some of its LCD lines to the production of the flexible OLED displays and is building a $4 billion facility. The report added that both the companies will likely receive some funding from Apple. Samsung on the other hand will produce 30% less orders than LG. According to KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo, the first AMOLED screened iPhone will roll off the assembly line in 2019.

Last month, a report had said that Apple could use Samsung’s OLED displays in 2018. At present, Samsung is supplying Apple with OLED displays for the Apple Watch and LCD displays for their iPads. Japan’s Nikkei newspaper reported last month that Apple plans to start using OLED screens for iPhones starting in 2018.
