Samsung to foray into self-driving car biz, will set up a new team

Samsung is the latest tech company that has decided to join the self driving car bandwagon. The South Korean company has announced that it is launching a new division of its business that will focus on autonomous driving technology and entertainment systems..

The newly established division will create a team that will develop automotive-related businesses, focusing on various aspects related to the smart car, including infotainment, satellite navigation and autonomous driving. Samsung said that the operation of this division will be headed by Executive Vice President Jonghwan Park and overseen by Vice Chairman & CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon.

The team will work outside of existing divisions to increase car components sales, but it will also cooperate with other technology units in the Samsung Group on these products. Samsung’s smartphone division is struggling and this could be a new another market to fuel growth and improve profits.

Google has been working on the self driving car for over five years now and the company has now started testing it. The company unveiled the self driving car prototype without steering wheel and brake last year in May. It was reported earlier this year that even Apple was working on the self-driving car.
