At Mobile World Congress 2015 today, Huawei have introduced the TalkBand B2, the successor to the Talkband B1 which debuted at last year’s conference. The TalkBand 2 is the second generation of Huawei’s fitness band / smartwatch line and introduces many welcome improvements over last years’ model.

One of the key changes in the Talkband B2 is the dull-grey plastic strap from the Talkband B1, which has been switched out in favour of either a stylish leather or a more durable TPU watch strap dependant upon the model you choose. On the front is a 0.73 inch AMOLED display with touch support and like last years’ model, the Talkband houses a fully-functional bluetooth headset which can be used to make voice calls.

Another improvement in the TalkBand B2 is the charging solution, with this year’s model now sporting a microUSB port instead of a USB2 port on the Talkband B1. The Talkband B2 uses Bluetooth 4.1 to connect to either your iPhone (running iOS 7 or later) or Android smartphone (running Android 4 or later).

The Talkband B2 runs on Huawei’s own proprietary OS and one of the interesting fitness functions is that the watch uses a 6-axis sensot to automatically detect your activity type – such as walking, running or cycling – using your speed and distanced travelled and assess the results against goals you have defined in Huawei’s companion app. The Talkband B2 is powered by a 90 mAh battery which Huawei say will offer 7 hours call time, 5 days working time or 12 days standby-time.

The key difference between the leather and TPU versions is the durability – whilst the TPU version is IP57 rated allowing it to be used up to 1 metre underwater for up to 30 minutes, the leather strap version is only splash resistant (no doubt due to the real leather strap).

Huawei hasn’t confirmed pricing or availability of the TalkBand B2 but a Huawei spokesperson – who wished to remain anonymous – suggested it could launch for between £149 and £199 when it hits the market later this year. The TalkBand B2 will be available in three confirmed colours at launch – Black, Silver and Gold with the latter having a leather strap and the former using a TPU strap.

Update: It is priced at 169 Euros for the standard version and the premium version costs 199 Euros.
