Smart Namo is an Android smartphone that is expected to arrive by September and it is named after Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Narendra Modi. Namo is an independent body of fans of Mr. Modi. The term Namo in the phone’s name stands for Next-generation Android Mobile Odyssey and it also a combination of the first two letters of Narendra Modi.
The smartphone will be a 5inch phablet with Full HD 1080p IPS display and the screen will be protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 2. The device will be powered by a 1.5GHz MT6589 Turbo Chipset from MediaTek and PowerVR SGX544 GPU. The rear camera is expected to be a 13MP camera and it will be capable of recording Full HD videos. The device will arrive in four variants depending on the RAM and ROM capacities – 1GB RAM and 16GB ROM, 2GB RAM and 16/32/64GB ROM. The device will be a dual SIM(GSM+GSM) smartphone and will have a 2500mAh battery. The device is rumored to be running on Android 4.2.1 at launch and it will get a Android 4.3 update over the air. The price of this device is expected to start from Rs. 16,ooo.
Like the other Android smartphones in the range, the Smart Namo will also have near stock UI and very little customization. In addition to the stock ROM, the team also mentioned that you will be able to download Wallpapers, themes and custom ROMs for the device.
Ameet Desai is currently in charge of handling the product and the Smart Namo team unsurprisingly comes from Surat, Gujarat. Ameet has been involved with manufacturing smartphones for nearly six years and believes that the Smart Namo will compete with the top brands in India.
To differentiate the smartphone in a crowded mid-range phablet market, the Smart Namo will be coming with extra connectivity features like DLNA and NFC. It will also be preloaded with videos and apps related to BJP, Narendra Modi and India Vision.
The company also plans to sell signature version of the different variants of the phone which will be carrying the signature of Narendra Modi himself. The pricing of 1GB RAM and 16GB ROM signature version is expected to be Rs.15,000 and that of the 2GB RAM and 32GB ROM is expected to be Rs. 22,000. The 2GB RAM and 64GB ROM version is expected to be auctioned at eBay.
In addition to the smartphones, team Namo also plans to introduce feature phones starting from Rs.1,000.
