Here is my first impressions of the just announced Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 which was announced yesterday in Chennai. We got some hands on time with the latest member of the Duos Dual SIM range from Samsung and the handset is also the smaller of the 2 Galaxy Mega devices announced. The phone is priced at Rs.25100 and packs a really large 5.8 inch display with a qHD resolution of 960×540 pixels. It also packs 2 microSIM card slots with a Smart Dual SIM feature.  There is 8GB of inbuilt memory on board and also room for expansion using the microSD card slot which supports cards upto 64GB.

Opening the back cover you get access to the SIM card slots and the microSD card slot. You also see the 2600 mAh battery which is the same one found on the Galaxy S4.

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 is about 1 mm thicker than the Galaxy Mega 6.3 at 10mm . The phone is on the heavier side at 182 grams.

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 runs on Android 4.2.2 with Samsung’s TouchWiz layer on top of it.

When compared to the Galaxy Grand which is a similar device , the Mega 5.8 has a slightly better screen. slightly faster processor and runs on latest version of Android and packs a much bigger battery.

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 priced at Rs.25100 does offer a lot of features at an interesting price point , the handset does feel well built and not cheap. The only sad part is the resolution of the screen. A qHD resolution on a 5.8 inch screen is not the best possible user experience but that might have helped Samsung keep the costs low.  Expect the price to fall to the Rs.20000-22500 in a few weeks and it should be a great buy.
