BlackBerry’s core strength – the BlackBerry messenger, in a surprising move, is going cross platform with iOS and Android versions of the very popular messaging platform to be made available in the coming months. It was announced right now, at its BlackBerry live conference in Orlando. The iOS as well as the Android app will be free on the respective stores. BBM will be compatible on all iOS devices running iOS 6 and Android devices running 4.0 ICS and above.

While this may come as a shock to many, the app is losing its exclusivity after so many years. BlackBerry said that they will be bringing a full featured experience to all the platforms, so that parity is achieved. “it’s time to bring BBM to a larger audience” said Thorsten Heins during the announcement.
