IFIXIT has shared its teardown of the iPhone 17e, revealing one key feature that makes it practically useful—and potentially available to 16e owners without buying a new phone. That feature is the MagSafe ring Apple omitted from the previous model.
According to IFIXIT, the iPhone 17e restores MagSafe for more consistent wireless charging and accessory alignment. Apart from this, the phone largely retains the repair-friendly design of the 16e, including dual-entry access, accessible battery and display replacement, and a high degree of parts compatibility. Owners of the 16e may be able to gain MagSafe functionality by swapping the back panel once parts are available.
iPhone 17e Teardown
A Lumafield Neptune CT scan shows that the iPhone 17e is nearly identical internally to the 16e, with the MagSafe assembly as the main visible difference.
The dual-entry design allows users to open the device from the front or back without affecting unrelated components, and the electrically debonding battery adhesive remains in place, enabling safe removal of the 15.556 Wh battery, which is fully interchangeable with the 16e unit.

The 17e upgrades include the A19 chip replacing the A18, the C1X modem for improved battery efficiency and faster data, and base storage increasing from 128GB to 256GB. The display remains 60 Hz, the rear camera 48MP, and the selfie camera 12MP. The USB-C port remains deeply embedded and requires multiple components to be removed for replacement.

Teardown Reveals
Key findings from the teardown include:
- MagSafe back panel present and likely compatible with 16e
- Dual-entry design for front and back repairs
- Electrically debonding battery adhesive
- Battery is 15.556 Wh, same as 16e
- Display and cameras unchanged (48MP rear, 12MP selfie)
- A19 chip and C1X modem upgraded
- Base storage 256GB
- Logic board and most internal components largely swappable
- USB-C port remains difficult to access
- TrueDepth/Face ID modules are not cross-compatible

- Qi2 charging standard allows up to 15W on 17e; 16e with 17e back draws ~10W
- MagSafe improves alignment, efficiency, and reliability for wireless charging
- MagSafe enables accessory use, including car mounts, stands, wallets, grips, and battery packs
- Limitations for 16e users: “Thonk” sound, MagSafe animation, and StandBy mode do not transfer
IFIXIT noted that pricing estimates for the MagSafe back are around $120 through Apple after return credit, while third-party equivalents are approximately $20.
Repairability and Upgradeability
The iPhone 17e earns a provisional repairability score of 7/10. Dual-entry design, battery adhesive, and publicly available manuals enable straightforward repairs.
Most internal parts are swappable with the 16e, allowing owners to gain MagSafe functionality and minor upgrades without purchasing a new device. This flexibility strengthens the repair ecosystem, enhances parts reuse, and provides a practical upgrade path for 16e owners.
