Canon has announced that 2026 marks the 30th anniversary of its PowerShot digital compact camera lineup. To celebrate the milestone, the company will release a limited-edition version of the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III featuring a special design and commemorative branding.
PowerShot lineup completes 30 years
The PowerShot series was first introduced in July 1996 with the launch of the Canon PowerShot 600. Over the past three decades, the lineup has expanded to cater to a wide range of users, from beginners to advanced enthusiasts.
Canon designed the series to deliver high-quality photos and videos in compact and easy-to-use bodies. As of December 2025, the total global production of compact digital cameras, including the IXUS series, has exceeded 200 million units.
Current PowerShot lineup
The PowerShot series is currently divided into three categories based on different user needs:
- G Series: Focused on high image quality and advanced features in compact bodies
- V Series: Designed for video-first users with features suited for vlogging and content creation
- SX Series: Offers powerful zoom capabilities for long-distance shooting
PowerShot G7 X Mark III: 30th anniversary edition
Originally launched in August 2019, the PowerShot G7 X Mark III comes with a 1.0-inch stacked CMOS sensor with approximately 20.1 effective megapixels, along with a bright lens and 4.2x optical zoom.
The camera also supports video-focused features, including a dedicated Video Blog recording mode aimed at vloggers and creators. The limited-edition version introduces design and packaging changes, including:
- Exclusive graphite color finish
- Knurled control ring design
- Special 30th anniversary logo on the camera body
- Commemorative packaging
- Collector’s edition wrist strap with anniversary branding
This edition is positioned as a collector’s model celebrating the legacy of the PowerShot lineup.
