I HAPPEN TO HAVE NO CONFIRMED NEWS!!!!!
but i did speak to some mrketing T.L. in HTC and all he could tell me is this phone is not on it’s way till late january.. …., and also quoted a price of arnd 35K (lets hope he doesn’t have a clue as to what he’s talking)

Have asked a friend to get me a G1(from US), but some sites quote that once the phone’s unlocked the google sync. stops working, google contacts and every other google function stops as well (read as G1′s heart)…. this is using a software to unlock..

about asking t-mobile to unlock it, sorry havent read much about it… could you share some info..

Besides did you buy it for $179 with plan or $399 without a plan.. and did you happen to get the RC 30 update while you were on Airtel…

The phone was purchased on Ebay and since it was used on T-mobile network it was unlocked by them – they gave unlock code ..

so its fully functional

i did not buy from t-mobile .. the updates kept coming surprisingly .. im on RC 29 i think

Dude, i got a g1 handset from singapore .
when i inserted my vodafone sim card into it
it asks me the gmail id and password and strts to connect to google servers…I think it is locked .because untill n unless it will connect to google server it wont show me anything.What do you think…..Please the guy who started this forum can u please tell me that n ur unlocked g1 were u also getting this problem??is there any way to get it unlocked in india??

I got a G1 to India too. Haven’t been able to get the GPRS to work and the airtel support has been worse than pathetic.

I did send the 2 SMS’s to turn on GPRS and get mobile office working, but still can’t get data. I have a prepaid card.

The following settings worked for me.

I added a new access point with
Name : airtelgprs
APN: airtelgprs.com
All other settings were unchanged.

All I had to do was reboot my phone after saving the above profile!!

Hi, i got the G1, it’s unlocked, but the trouble is, it’s yet to be set up (signed in using my Gmail ID and all). The moment i boot the phone a screen comes, that requires me to put in my gmail user name and password… when i put in the required info, it cannot access the google servers (pretty obvious, as i haven’t manually put in the setting to activate my EGPRS on the phone).

Could someone here tell me how to get to the settings page, where i can manually set up my EGPRS settings/choose the right network, without first putting in my gmail username and password

You need a phone with an active GPRS connection to activate the G1

Wifi will not work !

IF you dont have GPRS ,enable it on your connection or if you have any friends using GPRS. Borrow their SIM card for the activation

@Sunny All most all features work in India except Paid Apps in the Market.

Google has restricted Paid Apps to be downloaded only to locked phones in the US.

All free market apps are possible to download on unlocked G1

Yes. You need GPRS for activation only . Phone will work without that.

But battery drains kinda fast with Wi-Fi on . If you can, buy an extra battery for the phone

I bought a t mobile shadow from a credit card scheme, and my Idea sim card work well with the phone (so i’m guessing its unlocked). The GPRS however doesn’t work. I tried the same on my motorola phone, and the GPRS works fine. Is there any kinda further unlocking i need to do? or are my settings all wrong?

I went to the idea site, and entered the data needed into the GPRS entry. But not all the settings provided had any options in the phone! So is there any hope?

looks like, my search has come to an end and we can certainly use G1 in India. However here my questions; it would be god if anybody can help me with.

1. What is the difference between SIM-unlocking and Hardware-locking?
2. What extra things are needed to purchase the unlocked phone from T-mobile ?
3. In-case, we purchase the phone in US and perform the so-called un-locking procedure, then putting a different SIM ( may be Verizon, AT&T ) and getting online — is this check sufficient to ensure that the phone is un-locked hence, 100% is going to work in India ?
4. Any news on unlocking the G2 ?

You need have GPRS active on your number. Thats the main requirement.

Even if you get a signal after putting a SIM Card otther than t-mobile , it can mean that its unlocked .

BSNL has a bad service record with regards to the GPRS activation.

Are you sure , the GPRS is active on your number ?

Can you try with a different network ?

I just bought an unlocked G1 from someone who got back from the UK. I have Airtel Live activated on my SIM but I’m unable to go beyond the Gmail login screen on the phone. After some snooping around, I also found and used the following information to create a new APN (which also doesn’t seem to work):

Name: Airtel Live!
APN: airtelfun.com
Proxy: 100.001.200.099
Port:8080
Server: 100.001.200.099
MCC: 404
MNC: 45

Left everything else empty.
Am I missing something? What more do I need to do to get it working?

if its asking for unlocking code then buy it from somebody online. Then try using ur vodafone card on it.

this should work… but make sure you have advanced GPRS activated on your mobile(costs min Rs. 199 rental…. zero rental plans wont allow you to log in)

just put any non T-mob card in ur G1 & start the phone it will prompt for unlock code… enter what u have(Warning: enter correct code… three time entered incorrect code might brick your phone).. if everything goes fine you will get sweet home screen… Now you can throw the unlock key in the trash can… you wont ever need that again…even after hard factory reset. Enjoy!!!

u have to subscribe to Mobile Connect service from vodafone which will cost u min 199 per month + usage charges… normal zero rental plan wont work… damn vodafone

current network: Phone off (it is disabled, i can’t navigate to change)
Network selection: Automatic / Manual. and when i try to search network, it is showing error as “The settings could not be opened”.

I’ve got a G1 from the U.K.. I got the phone unlocked, GPRS from AIRTEL . My problem is that i can only browse and make call. texting through the network but can’t access gmail and other IMs on the phone on AIRTEL network. These apps worked on Airtel network [Frnds SIM]. Can u please help. I’m in GOA

Check the APN Settings!
The APN settings are different for different Networks of Airtel!
Check Port Settings and Proxy settings!!

Should get it on an Airtel Website! under your Circle

The way to root a update is by
1) Download the Latest update file – German Buid (which is a DRC92) the same model i have.
2) Rename the update to update.zip and place it on the SD card
3) Keep Home key pressed and Power up the phone you should see Triangle Symbol
4) Press ALT+W to wipe your device. (You need to do this, or the device may hang at the flashing Android screen)
5 Press ALT+S to apply the update.
6) Mobile Restarts after update

Its Should work with breeze.

Not sure if you already got your solution, but as far as I know, sidekick cannot be unlocked. There r few phones from T-mobile that cannot be unlocked and unfortunately sidekick is one of them.

From what I know, you can only unlock if you have service and you can only have service on a T-Mobile SIM in America

Just go to any good cellphone repair shop, ask them to unlock it. They may charge anything between Rs 500 to 2000. Then it will work. I have been using G1 for the past one and half years.

My bro gave me a T-Mobile G1 but i dont know how to unlock it in india, the phone was working in the US.. when i insert the indian sim card (BSNL) it asks for sim unlock code.. what can be done to unlock the same.
