Samsung India has officially announced the launch of its latest solid-state drive, the Samsung 990 SSD. Available in 1-terabyte (TB) and 2TB capacities, the new drive utilizes PCIe 4.0 support and the company’s latest NAND technologies. It is positioned as a balanced storage solution aimed at gaming, creative professionals, and everyday PC usage.
Performance and Speed Specifications
The Samsung 990 SSD focuses on delivering high sequential and random performance across both capacity variants.
- Sequential Speeds: The 2TB model achieves sequential read speeds of up to 7,250 megabytes per second (MB/s), while the 1TB version reaches up to 7,150 MB/s. Both capacities share a sequential write speed of up to 6,450 MB/s, designed to facilitate quick file transfers and minimize loading times.
- Random Performance: For random read and write operations, the 2TB model delivers up to 850K IOPS read and 1,200K IOPS write. The 1TB variant provides up to 700K IOPS read and 1,100K IOPS write. These metrics are intended to improve application launch responsiveness and the handling of large-scale data workloads.
Storage Capacity and Power Efficiency
The expanded capacity options address the growing file sizes of modern applications and media. Based on an average file size of 64GB, the 2TB model can accommodate approximately 30 large-scale games, making it suitable for users managing substantial digital libraries.
In terms of power management, the Samsung 990 SSD features a 38% improvement in power efficiency compared to the previous 990 PRO model. This reduction in power consumption allows the drive to sustain high performance levels while optimizing overall energy use.
Software Integration
To assist with drive maintenance, the storage solution is compatible with Samsung Magician Software. This application provides tools for data migration, drive health monitoring, performance optimization, and data protection.
