WhatsApp has officially initiated the global rollout of username reservations, marking a significant transition in how users connect on the platform. The new feature is designed to act as a robust privacy shield, allowing individuals to communicate without disclosing their personal phone numbers.
A Privacy-First Approach to Connectivity
Unlike traditional social media handles, WhatsApp usernames are engineered strictly as a privacy feature rather than a tool for public discovery. The platform will not feature a public directory, nor will it offer algorithmic suggestions. To initiate a conversation via this method, a contact must know the exact username.

Key structural details of the rollout include:
- Phased In-App Notifications: Users will receive an alert within the app as soon as the reservation feature becomes available in their region.
- Navigation: Reservations can be configured by navigating to Settings > Account > Username on the latest version of the application.
- Cross-Platform Protection for Creators and Businesses: To maintain brand consistency, public figures, creators, and organizations have the option to claim usernames that match their existing Instagram or Facebook handles.
- Integrated Username Generator: For standard accounts, WhatsApp has introduced an automated generator to assist users in creating unique, non-identifiable names.
Enhanced Security with “Username Keys”
To prevent unsolicited messaging, WhatsApp is introducing an optional, secondary layer of security called a Username Key.
How it works: When enabled, any individual attempting to message an account for the very first time using a username must possess this specific key. Account holders retain the ability to change or reset this key at any given time to maintain control over their inbox.
Use Cases and Regional Campaigns

The implementation targets common social and professional scenarios where sharing a permanent phone number may feel premature—such as coordinating within school parent groups, organizing neighborhood events, or interacting with new acquaintances.
Once the system fully launches later this year, initiating a first-time chat with a username enabled will completely mask the user’s phone number from the recipient.
To promote awareness of the feature during its introductory phase, WhatsApp has partnered with actor Aamir Khan in India to highlight everyday situations where username sharing serves as a practical alternative to exchanging digits.
Availability
While username reservations are active starting this week, the full in-app integration and visibility of usernames during active messaging will deploy gradually over the coming months.
