DJI has launched the Osmo Mobile 8P globally, including India. The latest iteration of the company’s smartphone gimbal line focuses on expanded remote control functionality, enhanced subject tracking algorithms, and native integration with Apple devices.
Hardware Design and FrameTap Remote
The Osmo Mobile 8P weighs approximately 386 grams and retains the integrated design of its predecessors, including a built-in 215 mm extension rod and an updated built-in tripod that opens wider to provide increased stability on various surfaces.
A notable hardware addition is the Osmo FrameTap, a detachable magnetic remote control. The FrameTap features a built-in screen that mirrors the smartphone’s camera view or the view from the gimbal’s Multifunctional Module 2. It includes an intuitive joystick, allowing users to remotely adjust the gimbal’s pan, tilt, and zoom functions.
Battery and Power Specifications:
- Operating Time: Up to 10 hours of standard use.
- Power Bank Functionality: Features a built-in USB-C port that allows the gimbal to charge the connected smartphone during use.

Tracking Technology and Stabilization
The gimbal utilizes DJI’s eighth-generation 3-axis stabilization technology to steady smartphone footage. Alongside hardware stabilization, DJI has introduced several software and module-based tracking enhancements:
- ActiveTrack 8.0: Accessed via the DJI Mimo app, the updated tracking software is designed to navigate obstructions and maintain focus on subjects in crowded environments or during fast directional shifts.
- Multifunctional Module 2: When paired with this module, the gimbal can track general objects, such as vehicles or landmarks, in addition to people and pets. The module also features a built-in fill light with eight adjustable levels for brightness and color temperature.
- Apple DockKit Support: iPhone users can connect directly to the Osmo Mobile 8P to utilize native tracking features directly through the default iOS camera app, bypassing the need for third-party software.
Shooting Modes and Gimbal Movement
The Osmo Mobile 8P hardware supports specific movement patterns, including a tilt function for low-angle perspectives and 360° Infinite Spin, which allows for continuous horizontal rotation while keeping a subject locked in the frame.
Additionally, the DJI Mimo app provides several specialized shooting modes:
- DynamicZoom: Simulates stretching and compressing visual effects using automatic Move In and Move Out functions.
- Slow Shutter: Designed for low-light conditions to capture light trails and motion blur.
- Action Shot: Adjusts the gimbal’s responsiveness to maintain framing on fast-moving subjects.
- Widescreen Mode: Records video directly in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio without the need for post-production cropping.
