Google introduces screenless Fitbit Air with up to 7 days battery life

Google has introduced Fitbit Air, a new wearable device aimed at consumers seeking a less intrusive and more affordable alternative to traditional smartwatches and fitness trackers. Designed to integrate directly with the Google Health ecosystem, the device prioritizes a minimalist form factor for continuous wear.

Design and Hardware

The defining feature of the Fitbit Air is its screenless, “pebble” design, making it the smallest tracker in the company’s current lineup. Designed for discretion and continuous wear, the device relies entirely on a paired smartphone for data visualization and notifications.

Despite its compact size, the Fitbit Air is equipped with standard high-fidelity sensors that facilitate comprehensive health monitoring. Key tracking capabilities include:

  • 24/7 heart rate and resting heart rate
  • Heart rhythm monitoring with Atrial Fibrillation (Afib) alerts
  • Blood oxygen levels (SpO2)
  • Heart rate variability (HRV)
  • Sleep duration and sleep stage tracking

The device offers up to one week of battery life. Additionally, a fast-charging feature provides an estimated full day of power from a five-minute charge. For users already in the Google hardware ecosystem, the Fitbit Air allows for seamless data continuity; users can swap between wearing a Pixel Watch during the day and the Fitbit Air at night without losing continuous tracking metrics.

Software Integration and Activity Tracking

The Fitbit Air is managed entirely through the Google Health app. Activity tracking can be initiated manually within the app, or users can rely on the device’s automatic detection feature for common activities. According to Fitbit, this automatic detection algorithm personalizes to the user over time.

The device also integrates with Google Health Coach to provide personalized guidance. Notably, the software ecosystem supports image-based logging, allowing users to snap photos of cardio equipment or whiteboard circuit routines to log their workouts.

Customization and Band Styles

The core tracker module can be popped out and inserted into various interchangeable bands. Fitbit is launching the device with several band options designed for different use cases:

  • Performance Loop Band: The standard in-box band made from recycled materials, featuring a micro-adjustable, breathable fit.
  • Active Band: A silicone band designed to be sweatproof and water-resistant for high-intensity training.
  • Elevated Modern Band: A fashion-focused option designed to resemble a classic bracelet.
Stephen Curry Special Edition

Fitbit has also partnered with Stephen Curry to release a Special Edition Performance Loop band. This version comes in rye brown with orange accents and features a unique water-resistant coating and a raised interior print designed to increase airflow during physical activity.
