Apple launches Rs. 100 crore clean energy and environmental initiatives in India

Apple has announced new environmental initiatives in India focused on expanding renewable energy infrastructure, reducing plastic pollution, and supporting green entrepreneurship. The initiatives align with Apple’s goal of being carbon neutral across its entire footprint by 2030.

The programs include a Rs. 100 crore investment in renewable energy capacity and partnerships with CleanMax, WWF-India, and Acumen.

Renewable energy expansion with CleanMax

Apple is working with renewable energy developer CleanMax to expand renewable energy capacity in India. The Rs. 100 crore investment will support the development of over 150 megawatts of renewable energy.

This capacity is expected to power around 150,000 Indian households each year, with scope for additional expansion in the future. The initiative is also intended to support renewable energy deployment across Apple’s supply chain in India.

Apple has previously collaborated with CleanMax on rooftop solar projects that supply renewable energy to its offices and retail stores in India.

Plastic pollution reduction and waste systems with WWF-India

Apple is collaborating with WWF-India on recycling and waste management systems aimed at reducing plastic pollution.

The program builds on WWF-India’s work with Saahas Zero Waste in Goa, where systems were developed to collect, sort, and recover recyclable materials with full traceability to prevent leakage into ecosystems.

With Apple’s support, the approach is being expanded to new regions, including Coimbatore, in coordination with local authorities, communities, and waste workers. The focus is on strengthening collection and recovery systems for recyclable materials.

Green entrepreneurship support with Acumen

Apple is partnering with Acumen to support early-stage enterprises working in waste management, circular economy, regenerative agriculture, and sustainable livelihoods.

The program provides catalytic grants to six enterprises, along with mentorship, technical support, strategic guidance, and network access.

Apple has previously supported Acumen’s Energy for Livelihoods Accelerator. The supported enterprises include:

  • Saptkrishi – low-cost storage system “Sabjikothi” for reducing crop losses
  • Yotuh Energy – electric refrigerated trucks for transport of food and medicine
  • Mowo Fleet – platform enabling women to work as EV drivers and entrepreneurs
Outlook

Apple’s environmental initiatives in India reflect its stated approach of linking environmental programs with operational and technological development.

As Sarah Chandler, Apple’s vice president of Environment and Supply Chain Innovation, said, the company’s environmental commitment also supports innovation across its operations.

She said that “our commitment to the environment is also a driving force for innovation,” and added that Apple is “proud to expand our efforts to invest in India’s clean energy economy” and support protection of natural resources.

Overall, the initiatives continue Apple’s approach toward renewable energy expansion, waste system development, and support for early-stage environmental enterprises in line with its 2030 carbon neutrality target.
