HMD to bring Digital Wallets, AI, and Video Calling to feature phones in H1 2026

Human Mobile Devices (HMD) has outlined a series of new features launching throughout 2026 aimed at expanding the capabilities of traditional feature phones. The company’s upcoming hardware and software updates focus on integrating modern digital services—such as financial tools, enhanced communication applications, and artificial intelligence—into simpler, more affordable devices.

The stated goal of these updates is to provide essential digital services to under-connected populations globally, while also offering tailored solutions for mature markets and older demographics.

Built-in Digital Wallets and Secure Remittance

In 2026, HMD plans to introduce a built-in digital wallet designed for secure remittance on feature phones. This service will allow users to receive, store, and cash out money using local payment systems.

  • Capabilities: Users will be able to transfer funds directly to their Unified Payments Interface (UPI) accounts, enabling payments for everyday goods using existing infrastructure.
  • Security: The system incorporates device-level security and PIN protection.
  • Partnerships: The remittance service is being developed in collaboration with Kivi3, a fintech technology provider, and Polygon Labs, a blockchain payments company.
  • Rollout: The initial launch is scheduled for India in the first half of 2026, driven by the country’s status as the world’s largest remittance market and a leader in digital payments. A phased international rollout is planned for later in the year.
Video Calling and Messaging Integration

HMD is also expanding communication options on feature phones by introducing front-facing cameras and a new, lightweight application called “Xpress Chat.”

  • Cross-Platform Connectivity: The Xpress Chat app will allow feature phone users to conduct video calls with friends and family.
  • Messaging Features: The application supports voice messages, photo sharing, and group chats.
  • Compatibility: The service is designed to work seamlessly between feature phones and smartphones, provided both devices have the Xpress Chat app installed.
Artificial Intelligence Integration

HMD is incorporating AI assistants into its feature phone lineup to simplify navigation and expand usability without requiring complex menus.

  • Everyday Assistance: Users will be able to perform basic tasks using simple voice commands, such as making calls, setting alarms, operating the flashlight, and asking simple questions. HMD’s recent partnership with Sarvam AI is specifically aimed at bringing locally relevant AI experiences to the Indian market.
  • Companionship for Older Adults: In European markets, HMD is piloting an AI service tailored for older adults in partnership with inTouch, a company focused on reducing senior isolation. Accessible via a single button press, this AI is programmed to speak slowly, retain personal history, and engage in context-aware conversations to support independence and well-being.
Future Outlook

HMD states that these developments are part of a broader strategy to transform feature phones into platforms for financial inclusion and technological accessibility. The company plans to release further details regarding product availability, additional partnerships, and specific international expansion timelines throughout 2026.

Regarding this, Vassili le Moigne, founder and CEO of inTouch, said:

We bring sophisticated AI companionship to seniors through the most familiar interface imaginable: their voice, on a simple phone they already trust. We remove the barriers to entry so they can just pick up the device and enjoy connecting. We are thrilled to work with HMD to support seniors and their loved ones, driving deeper connection and greater family well-being.

Jean-François Baril, Chairman and CEO of Human Mobile Devices, said:

At HMD, we believe innovation is most powerful when it makes technology more accessible and meaningful in everyday life. The partnership with Sarvam AI, recently announced in India, is a strong example of how local innovation ecosystems are helping shape the future of mobile experiences. Building on our leadership in feature phones, our teams are reimagining what these devices can deliver — from AI and communication to financial access and digital services. Today’s announcement marks an important step forward as we bring smarter, more inclusive innovation to the next billion users.
