Xiaomi Group and Leica Camera AG have officially announced an upgrade to their global imaging strategic partnership, shifting from “joint R&D” to a new “strategic co-creation model.” The companies revealed that the first device to utilize this new framework, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra.
Strategic Co-Creation Model
According to the announcement, this new model represents a deeper, multi-layered collaboration intended to move beyond traditional mobile imaging limitations. The partnership aims to integrate Leica’s expertise in professional optics, aesthetic philosophy, and interactive concepts directly into the product development process from its origin.
Both companies state that the goal is to “completely reconstruct the mobile imaging experience” by combining their respective strengths in a more integrated manner than previous joint research and development efforts allowed.
New Optical System and Hardware
A central component of this announcement is the introduction of a new generation of optical system solutions. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra will feature the first Leica APO-certified telephoto lens in the mobile imaging field.
Leica APO (Apochromatic) lenses are an industry benchmark known for their ability to minimize chromatic aberration (color fringing) and deliver superior low dispersion and high resolution. The integration of this technology into a smartphone form factor marks a significant shift in mobile telephoto photography.
In addition to the telephoto lens, the optical system includes a next-generation 1-inch main camera sensor designed specifically for mobile devices. Xiaomi claims this combination will deliver:
- Significant improvements in low-light and night scene image purity.
- Higher accuracy in detail reproduction for high-contrast scenes.
- Expanded creative freedom in telephoto shooting.
Availability
The new optical capabilities will debut exclusively on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, and more details will be unveiled next week when it launches in China. The global launch is expected in early March at the MWC 2026 event since the phone has already received FCC certification.
Regarding this, Lu Weibing, Xiaomi Group Partner, President of the Mobile Phone Division, and General Manager of the Xiaomi Brand, said:
Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s release this year, taking the lead in the ultra-high-end market, also marks the completion of Xiaomi’s new release rhythm of “all flagship high-end models released in the same year.”
