The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Jio to introduce a telecom-based safety alert system across India’s National Highways. The system will provide real-time alerts to travellers approaching accident-prone or hazardous zones, leveraging Jio’s 4G and 5G network.
Key Features
- Advance Warnings: Alerts for accident-prone stretches, stray-cattle zones, fog-affected areas, and emergency diversions.
- Multi-Channel Alerts: Notifications delivered via SMS, WhatsApp, and high-priority calls.
- Integration with NHAI Platforms: Linked with the ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile app and emergency helpline number 1033.
- Wide Coverage: Applicable to all Jio mobile users on or near National Highways.
- Quick Deployment: Utilizes existing telecom towers; no additional roadside hardware needed.
- Scalable Approach: Initial pilot in select regional offices; plan to expand to other telecom operators.
- Compliance & Security: Fully aligned with regulatory and data-protection requirements.
Impact and Outlook
The initiative uses the reach of Jio’s telecom network to deliver timely safety alerts at scale, contributing to safer and more informed travel on National Highways, said Mr. Jyotindra Thacker, President of Reliance Jio.
The system is designed to enhance commuter awareness and reduce preventable road incidents, and NHAI plans to expand the initiative with other telecom service providers, promoting safer, smarter, and more efficient travel across the National Highway network.

Commenting on the initiative, NHAI Chairman Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav said,
This initiative represents an important step forward in providing timely and reliable information to commuters, enabling them to make informed choices and adopt safer driving practices well in advance. I am confident that this initiative will set a new benchmark in technology-enabled road safety management on National Highways.
