DJI Osmo Action 6 with 1/1.1″ sensor, variable aperture, up to 4K 120fps video announced

DJI last week officially introduced the Osmo Action 6, a new flagship action camera, along with the DJI Neo 2. The Osmo Action 6 breaks from the traditional fixed-aperture design of action cameras by being DJI’s first in the category to feature a variable aperture.

Coupled with an innovative 1/1.1-inch square sensor, the camera is positioned to significantly enhance image performance, offering new creative possibilities for users in various scenarios, including diving, skiing, cycling, hiking, and daily vlogging.

Variable Aperture

The Osmo Action 6 introduces a variable aperture range from f/2.0 to f/4.0. This flexibility allows users to select an appropriate aperture based on their shooting environment and creative goals.

  • In Auto mode, the aperture will adjust automatically within the selected range to suit varying light conditions.
  • The camera supports a maximum aperture of f/2.0 in Super Night Mode, which is designed to improve low-light image quality.
  • When using a macro lens, a shallow depth of field effect can be created at closer focusing distances.
  • In bright night scenes, the Starburst Mode can be activated, utilizing the f/4.0 aperture to create a starburst effect on point light sources.

New 1/1.1″ Sensor

At the core of the Osmo Action 6’s image performance is a newly upgraded 1/1.1-inch square sensor. This sensor is noted for its 2.4 μm equivalent pixel size and a dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops.

  • The camera is capable of delivering clear and sharp images with vivid details in both bright and dark areas, even in low-light or high-contrast settings.
  • It supports video recording at up to 4K/120fps in a 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • The combination of a larger sensor, wider aperture, and new noise reduction algorithm allows the camera’s Super Night Mode to capture night scene images at up to 4K/60fps in very low light.
  • The 10-bit D-Log M color mode is included, which preserves highlight and shadow details for post-processing color grading. It also supports in-camera preview and restoration display of the D-Log M color.
  • The custom square sensor enables a new 4K free cropping mode, allowing users to shoot first and then crop the original footage to various aspect ratios, such as 16:9 and 9:16, for different media platforms.

Additional shooting options include:

  • Super Stabilizer 3.0 and 4K HorizonSteady for stable footage.
  • A new 2x lossless zoom function that maintains 4K ultra-high resolution.
  • An everyday wide-angle mode designed to reduce vertical distortion while maintaining a wide field of view.
  • Built-in film tones for quick style application.

Upgraded Battery, Storage, and Intelligent Features

The Osmo Action 6 introduces several hardware and software enhancements:

  • Accessories: New macro and wide-angle lenses are available. The macro lens enables closer focusing distances, while the new wide-angle lens can expand the field of view from the native 155° ultra-wide angle to a maximum of 182°.
  • Battery and Temperature: The camera can shoot for up to 4 hours on a single battery and operate in temperatures from -20°C to 45°C. Fast charging can restore 80% battery in about 22 minutes and fully charge in about 52 minutes.
  • Storage and Data: The camera has a built-in 50GB storage space. Transmission performance is improved, with wireless speeds up to 80MB/s (Wi-Fi 6.0) and wired speeds up to 300MB/s (USB 3.1). A built-in timecode function is included to simplify the alignment of multi-camera footage in post-production.
  • Smart Functions: Features include a portrait mode that prioritizes subject detection and a subject centering function. The upgraded gesture control allows users to start and stop recording with simple palm gestures.
Osmo Ecosystem and Performance

The Osmo Action 6 is designed for use across diverse scenarios, leveraging the broader Osmo ecosystem:

  • Audio: It can connect directly to two DJI microphone transmitters via the OsmoAudio™ ecosystem for high-quality, dual-person audio recording without a separate receiver.
  • Mounting: It retains DJI’s magnetic quick-release interface, now upgraded to a two-way quick-release design for easier disassembly and multi-angle shooting.
  • Outdoor Performance: The body is waterproof to 20 meters. A built-in color temperature sensor and professional water pressure gauge are intended to accurately reproduce underwater colors and record key data. The low-temperature resistant battery maintains performance in frigid conditions.
  • Sports: The camera includes powerful stabilization technology and supports the addition of sports data dashboards to footage.
