Google has identified a potential battery overheating issue affecting certain Pixel 6a devices, following reports of overheating and two incidents of devices catching fire earlier this year.
In response to these issues, Google plans to roll out a mandatory software update that activates battery management functions aimed at limiting battery capacity and charging speed once the device reaches 400 charge cycles.
Battery Issue and Update Details
Starting July 8, 2025, all Pixel 6a devices will automatically receive the Android 16 update. However, the new battery management features will only activate on affected devices after reaching 400 battery charge cycles. A warning notification will be sent to users at 375 cycles.
This update aims to lower the risk of battery overheating by throttling capacity and charging speed. Impacted users will also have access to support options, including free battery replacements.
Impact on Battery Performance
Once active, these battery management features may cause:
- Shorter battery life between charges
- Slower charging rates
- After the update, your device may temporarily display unusual battery levels while it recalibrates based on the adjusted capacity.
According to Google, these features will remain in effect until the battery is replaced.
Support and Replacement Program
Owners of affected Pixel 6a phones are eligible for one complimentary battery replacement, available from July 21, 2025. Service will be provided at select walk-in repair centers across:
- United States
- Canada
- United Kingdom
- Germany
- Singapore
- Japan
- India
Mail-in repair options are also offered in the US and India. Battery replacements require a physical inspection to confirm device condition; phones with liquid damage or other significant issues may be disqualified.
For regions where battery replacement is unavailable or unsuitable, Google may provide alternative support, such as:
- Cash compensation
- Google Store discount codes
These options are exclusively available to individual consumers and must be claimed before July 8, 2026.
Eligibility and Registration
Google said, “Not all Pixel 6a devices will experience these changes.” Users can verify their eligibility and register for support via Google’s dedicated registration page.
The program is intended only for individual end users, excluding enterprise customers and bulk purchasers. The original warranty terms remain unchanged and are not extended through this program.
