Meta AI gets AI-powered video editing feature across apps

Meta on Wednesday announced the rollout of its first generative AI video editing tool—available on the Meta AI app, Meta.AI website, and Edits app—marking its first step toward integrating AI-powered video generation and editing across platforms, inspired by its “Movie Gen” AI models.

Easy Video Editing for Everyone

The tool enables users to quickly edit short-form videos using over 50 built-in AI prompts that can change clothing styles, backgrounds, visual tones, and more.

  • Users can upload a video and select a prompt to creatively edit up to 10 seconds of footage—for free, for a limited time.
  • After editing your video, you can share it to Facebook or Instagram using the Edits app or Meta AI app, or post it directly to the Discover feed from the Meta AI app or website.

Transformations include turning clips into retro comic-style scenes, adding soft sparkles and a dreamy atmosphere to cloudy footage, or applying a video game-inspired look with bold lighting and stylized outfits.

Meta said the tool was developed to make video editing simple and creative for everyone—whether you’re revisiting a family moment or making content for an audience. The company also worked with creators to shape prompt ideas that would resonate across communities, making the experience part of a smooth content creation workflow.

Meta’s AI Media Development Timeline

This launch is built on several of Meta’s key AI advancements:

  • In 2022, Meta introduced Make-A-Scene, a system that enabled generation of images, sound, video, and 3D visuals using AI
  • Later, diffusion models led to the development of Llama Image foundation models, which brought improvements to how AI creates and edits images and video
  • In 2023, Meta launched Movie Gen, a model capable of producing and editing custom video content using only simple text prompts

These developments have now shaped Meta’s first public-facing AI video editing feature, designed to help people create expressive, imaginative videos with ease.

Availability and What’s Coming Next

The AI video editing tool is now available in the US and more countries, though the full list hasn’t been shared. Later this year, Meta plans to add a feature that lets users create video edits using their own custom text prompts for more personalized and precise results.
