Sony Electronics Inc. has launched the WH-1000XM6, the latest wireless noise-canceling headphones in its 1000X series, following leaks that surfaced earlier this week.
Design
The WH-1000XM6 carries forward the classic 1000X series design with updates focused on comfort, durability, and sustainability. It has a wider, softer synthetic leather headband for comfortable wear and stretchable ear pads that lessen pressure during extended use.
The asymmetrical layout makes it easy to distinguish between left and right sides. Built for long-term use, the headphones include a durable folding structure crafted with advanced metal injection molding and a compact case with a magnetic closure for easy storage.
Aligning with Sony’s sustainability goals, the packaging is entirely paper-based, made from its Original Blended Material that combines bamboo, sugarcane fibers, and recycled paper to help minimize plastic use in its premium audio products.
Audio and Tuning
Sony introduced a redesigned driver unit with a high rigidity carbon fiber dome and an updated voice coil, improving clarity across all frequencies. Vocals sound richer, instruments more defined, and the overall sound aims to reflect studio-quality accuracy.
The headphones support High-Resolution Audio and wireless Hi-Res Audio via LDAC, Sony’s own codec, while DSEE Extreme uses Edge-AI to enhance compressed music files in real time.
Audio tuning involved Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated engineers from Sterling Sound, Battery Studios, and Coast Mastering, including Randy Merrill, Chris Gehringer, Mike Piacentini, and Michael Romanowski.
Noise Cancellation and Smart Features
- Uses the HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3, which is seven times faster than previous models.
- Features 12 microphones, 1.5 times more than the WH-1000XM5, for precise real-time sound detection.
- Adaptive NC Optimizer automatically adjusts noise cancellation based on surrounding conditions and air pressure.
- Auto Ambient Sound Mode filters in important sounds like announcements and conversations.
- Scene-Based Listening automatically adjusts noise cancellation and audio based on user activity and location.
- Quick Access allows fast playback from services such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.
As part of the “For The Music” campaign, Sony partnered with artist Post Malone to showcase how audio technology can deepen the connection between listeners and artists.
Entertainment and Customization
- 360 Reality Audio Upmix converts stereo sound into immersive spatial audio using Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound technology.
- Game EQ, created with Sony’s INZONE gaming brand, enhances audio for first-person shooter games.
- The Sony | Sound Connect app offers a 10-band equalizer and background music effects.
Call Quality and Controls
A six-microphone AI beamforming system isolates the user’s voice even in noisy environments. A dedicated mute button allows instant muting. Users can switch between noise cancellation, ambient sound, and microphone mute using touch controls and physical buttons.
Connectivity and Battery
The WH-1000XM6 supports Low Energy (LE) Audio for reduced latency and includes AuraCast for broadcast compatibility. It features Multi-Point and Auto Switch for smooth device transitions, while USB-C charging enables listening during charging. With noise cancellation on, the battery lasts up to 30 hours, and a quick 3-minute charge offers approximately 3 hours of playback.
