Dolby Laboratories has announced plans to introduce its premium cinema offering, Dolby Cinema, to the Indian market within the year 2025.
The initial rollout will see Dolby Cinema screens installed in partnership with six exhibitors across the country:
- City Pride in Pune
- Allu Cineplex in Hyderabad
- LA Cinema in Trichy
- AMB Cinemas in Bengaluru
- EVM Cinemas in Kochi
- G Cineplex in Ulikkal
Dolby Cinema combines proprietary picture and sound technologies, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, respectively, within a specifically designed auditorium environment. Dolby Vision aims to deliver enhanced brightness, contrast, and colour reproduction compared to standard screens.
Dolby Atmos provides an immersive audio experience with sound potentially emanating from all directions, including overhead. According to Dolby, the overall design intends to optimize the viewing experience for every seat in the auditorium.
The company states that this initiative aims to offer Indian audiences a viewing experience aligned with the filmmaker’s original creative intent.
To support content creation for this format, Dolby noted the existence of 24 Dolby Atmos theatrical mixing facilities in India. Furthermore, Dolby recently collaborated with Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad to establish the country’s first Dolby Vision colour grading facility designed for cinema, providing local filmmakers access to post-production tools for the format.
