Worldwide tablet shipments up 20.4% YoY in Q3 2024: IDC

Worldwide tablet shipments grew 20.4% in the third quarter of 2024 (3Q24), totaling 39.6 million units, according to preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC). As usual, Apple tops the table with 12.6 million units, showcasing a modest YoY growth of 1.4%.

Samsung stood second with total shipments of around 7.1 million units and YoY growth of 18.3%, all thanks to the company’s entry-level Galaxy Tab A9 series tablets and commercial sales. Amazon secured third place with a shipment of 4.6 million units and a remarkable YoY growth of 111.3%, primarily due to Prime Day sales during the quarter.

HUAWEI remained in the 4th place with a solid growth of 44.1% year-over-year and shipments of 3.2 million units. In Q3 2024, Lenovo dropped down to 5th position with 3 million shipment units. Yet, the company’s sale is up 14.7% YoY, mainly driven by PRC and Western Europe markets.

The market is expected to grow in the upcoming quarters as active channel filings have been undertaken in preparation for major promotional events and the holiday season. Further, the integration of AI features in tablets would also attract buyers, which in turn would increase sales.

Regarding the matter, Anuroopa Nataraj, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers said,

There are several appealing opportunities for vendors to increase their presence in the tablet market – collaboration with educational institutions, entertainment and gaming, cross device connectivity, integrations in healthcare and many more. Embracing AI-powered features to enhance user experience will facilitate growth across these areas. Recent innovations in AI have begun to attract consumers willing to pay a premium price. As AI features and applications grow, more consumers will prioritize these advanced capabilities in their next purchase.
