Microsoft to shut down Xbox 360 Store in July 2024

Microsoft has announced that the Xbox 360 Store will be closing its doors in July 2024. This means that starting from that date, Xbox 360 owners won’t be able to buy new Xbox 360 games, DLC (extra game content), and other things from the store.

The Xbox 360 Marketplace, where you can get avatars and games, will also be closed for new purchases. Microsoft mentioned that in November, it will be 18 years since they launched the Xbox 360.

Changes Starting July 2024

Starting from July 29, 2024, Microsoft will stop supporting the ability to buy new games and extras from the Xbox 360 Store and the Xbox 360 Marketplace. This also means the Microsoft Movies & TV app won’t work on Xbox 360 after that date, so you won’t be able to watch TV shows and movies.

You can keep buying games and extras from the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace until July 2024. This change won’t affect your ability to play the games and extras you already bought.

  • Even after July 2024, you can still play games and enjoy multiplayer, as long as the game’s maker keeps the online servers running.
  • Your game progress can be saved to the cloud, and you can continue playing on newer consoles like Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S with your saved data.

What about Backward Compatibility?

After July 29, 2024, you can still buy games and DLC from the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace. This change won’t stop you from playing games or DLC you already bought.

The games you got for your Xbox 360 will still work, even on newer consoles like Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, thanks to backward compatibility.

Content with Microsoft Movies & TV App

If you have the Microsoft Movies & TV app on Windows 10 or newer devices, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S, your purchased content from the Xbox 360 Store will remain accessible and viewable on these devices.

Announcing the update, Dave McCarthy, CVP Xbox Player Services, said:

Our backward-compatibility program reflects our appreciation for gaming’s rich legacy. We have preserved countless games from the Xbox 360 era so you can enjoy them on Xbox Series X|S.

These games have been upgraded to look and play better than ever, while keeping their original essence. You can experience these Xbox 360 games with FPS Boost, Auto HDR, and faster loading times.
