Reliance Jio trials 5G VoNR with 5G core using 4G VoLTE


Reliance Jio is now trialing interoperability among 4G VoLTE as well as 5G VoNR, following the demonstration of some use cases driven by 5th trial airwaves. Jio will endeavor to meet both consumer and business needs. According to an ET Telecom article, the carrier is already seeking to offer 5G as a service to enterprises.

Jio will utilize Jio 5G Hyperlite Stack, an indigenously developed 5G solution/technology, in order to offer 5G services to organizations. Jio is reportedly developing a 5G network slicing platform (NSP) that will enable the company to offer Network Slicing as a service.

Jio President Mathew Oommen told ET that the business is committed to developing the “right platforms” more for its 5G services and is not averse to evaluating “third party technology”. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planned to conduct 5G spectrum auctions between July and August 2022, and customers can anticipate the rollout of commercial 5G networks within three to four months after the auctions conclude.

What is 5G VoNR?

In a phrase, VoNR is to 5G what VoLTE is to 4G. 5G VoNR enables calls to benefit from the lower latency offered by 5G networks while also increasing sound quality. Telecom firms currently move to 4G, 3G, or even 2G networks for voice calls on their 5G networks, but this technology will eliminate the need to fall back to 4G for voice calls.

After trialling advanced 5G services and scenarios, Jio has upgraded its 4G VoLTE network and integrated its Indigenous 5G core to trial 5G VoNR with 4G VoLTE.

This includes seamless interoperability between existing 4G voice/video capable devices with enhanced 5G voice and video devices using our 5G network.

Jio was the leader in 2016 when we brought VoLTE at scale in India, and the only network in the world with no CSFB, and we continue to lead in the latest advancements by maturing Voice over 5GNR using our indigenous 5G stack.
