Samsung 6G Research and Spectrum White Paper released

Samsung Electronics announced a white paper today highlighting the company’s strategy for obtaining global frequency bands for 6G, the next-generation communications technology. The study, titled 6G Spectrum: Expanding the Frontier, outlines how to get the spectrum needed to accomplish the company’s 6G ambition, which was first announced in a white paper released in early July 2020.

Samsung 6G Spectrum

High-fidelity mobile holograms with completely immersive extended reality (XR) require ultra-wideband uninterrupted spectrum ranging from hundreds of MHz to tens of GHz. More coverage is also sought. Samsung advises evaluating all accessible 6G bands, from low-band under 1 GHz to mid-band 1–24 GHz and high-band 24-300 GHz.

Not only does this show the need to obtain additional bands, but also that 5G networks will still be functioning when 6G launches. The mid-band (7–24 GHz) is a possibility for greater data speeds and reasonable coverage. The sub-terahertz band (92–300 GHz) is being studied for ultra-high data rate support. Also mentioned in the white paper is the possibility of reframing current bands utilized for 3GPP, 4GPP, and 5GPP networks for 6G use. It also states that research on future rules and technologies on spectrum usage is necessary to support 6G and other services efficiently and with flexibility.

On the other hand, Samsung talked about its research on sub-THz band communications, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), cross division duplex (XDD), full duplex, artificial intelligence (AI-NC), and energy conservation (AI-ES).

Samsung 6G forum: Launch

On May 13, 2022, Samsung plans to hold its first Samsung 6G forum, where it will share more information and the results of its 6G research.

Speaking on the introduction of 6G Spectrum, Sunghyun Choi, Executive Vice President and Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research, said,

We have started on our journey long ago to understand, develop and standardize the 6G communications technology. We are committed to taking the lead and sharing our findings to spread our vision to bring the next hyper-connected experience to every corner of life.
