Android 12 Beta 5 with final tweaks, Calculator app with Material You UI released ahead of stable roll out


Google has released the Android 12 beta 5 which has reached release candidate after it reached Platform Stability with Beta 4 that was released last month. All app-facing surfaces are final, including SDK and NDK APIs, app-facing system behaviors, and restrictions on non-SDK interfaces, said Google.

You can now swipe up from the home screen of the Pixel Launcher to access the search bar. Search bar’s background expands to fill the top of the screen when scrolling in the app drawer. Home controls can now be accessed from the lock screen instead of the power button. There is also a new calculator app with ‘material You’ UI. Device Personalization Services is now called Private Compute Core.

Android 12 brings Privacy dashboard, Microphone & camera indicators, Microphone & camera toggles, Clipboard read notification, Stretch overscroll, App splash screens and Keygen changes.

Android 12 Beta 5 is now available for Pixel 3 and later, including the latest Pixel 5a 5G. You can get it from Android developer website here manually, or you can enroll here to get the OTA update to your device. Google said that the stable release in the coming weeks, so we can expect it sometime later this month, before the Pixel 6 launch which will obviously come with Android 12 out of the box.
