Review – Otterbox Commuter Series Case for Nokia N900

Otterbox is a company that makes some of the best protective cases for phones. So when I heard that they are making a case for the Nokia N900, I decided to review it. This is the review of the Nokia N900 Commuter Series Case from OtterBox and I describe what sets this case apart from the others.Cases always have a mixed reception. Some people use cases saying it gives protection to their device and sometimes improves the looks. Others say it adds unnecessary bulk to the device and that it also spoils the looks of the phone. I am amongst the former group of people. I believe that even if cases add some bulk, cases protect your device from scratches, bumps and falls.

Packaging

The Nokia N900 Otterbox case comes in a clear see through package. This helps customers to have a good look at the actual product that they are purchasing. It also highlights the product and makes it more attractive to the customer.

Along with the Otterbox case, you also get a screen protector and a cleaning cloth which are added bonuses.

Installation

Fitting the Otterbox onto your N900 is just as easy as other cases although it may look difficult. Just put the cover over the phone’s back and front and press it, the cover locks firmly in place giving you a satisfying click sound.

The screen protector is same as the other ones available on the market and for all those who are unaware of how to install it, there is a guide available at the official site on how to install it onto your device.

Protection

The Otterbox cover consists of two parts, the screen plate which protects the region around the screen/upper sliding portion of the N900. The other part is the cover for the lower portion of the device. This part itself has two portions a polycarbonate outer shell and a silicon inner shell. The inner shell is made out of silicon so as to absorb the shock of an impact and also to avoid scratches etc on the body.

The silicon part also extends to provide covering to the exposed parts such as the 3.5mm audio jack and the microUSB port. The upper portion is also protected including the power key, camera key and the volume up/down rocker key. These coverings help to eliminate dust entering the ports and spoiling functionality.

There is also a silicon border around the camera region which prevents scratches and also allows the device to grip the surface on which it is placed. You can still use the built-in kickstand of the N900 even with the case fitted.

The case is sturdy enough to sustain most drops and knocks that we encounter in day to day life. But high speed impacts or drops from large heights might cause some damage but the Otterbox will ensure maximum protection for your device.

Comfort

The Otterbox is a quite bulky due to the amount of protection it provides and so it adds a few grams to the device’s weight and also a few millimeters to its waistline. But we had no problem in putting the device in our jeans or shirt pockets. But for those people who wear tight jeans it might be an issue. But the thickness is actually associated with the  phone.

The slider does not get affected by fitting the case. The slider slides up and down smoothly and also locks in place even with the cover on. The case is made of polycarbonate and has a matte effect to its surface which boosts grip.

The 3.5mm jack covering is easy to open but the microUSB port covering is slightly more difficult to open.

The only bad thing about the cover is the right side where it makes the use of the keylock button and taking out the stylus difficult due to the extra thickness. You will find it extremely difficult if you have short nails.

Removing the case is a bit difficult unless you apply the appropriate method. This we liked very much as it prevents accidental removal or opening of the case. To open it easily, you have to start at the top corners and it comes off very easily.

Conclusion

The Otterbox case maybe bulky but it provides a lot of protection for your device. There are a very few cases which provide such extensive protection or your device. The case is also very easy and comfortable to use apart from the disadvantage which is mentioned in the review regarding the right side.

It is available for purchase at their official site at a price of 34.95 US$ and now as part of a promotion, you also get a free stand. The Otterbox Commuter Case for the Nokia N900 is your best bet if you want a perfect case to protect your N900 from scratches, falls and impacts.
