Samsung’s appeal in $120 million Apple lawsuit rejected by Supreme Court

Samsung’s fight with Apple seems to have come to an end at the moment as Supreme court has refused to hear Samsung’s appeal in the case. Backing the circuit court decision reinstating a $120 million penalty for Apple’s patent infringement technologies like slide to unlock and autocorrecting text.

The current appeal comes from May 2014 verdict by a jury in federal court in San Jose, California who ordered Samsung to pay $119.6 million for using the Apple technology. Samsung, however, argued saying that the lower court didn’t consider additional legal material, and has changed laws for both issuing injunctions and invalidating patents.

Though the $120 Million isn’t a big number for a company like Samsung, it is about having to pay the money in the first place. Samsung has been fighting the lawsuit for a long time and now it looks like this is a roadblock for Samsung as it doesn’t have any courts to turn to.

Samsung has released a statement after the Supreme Court rejected its appeal,

Our argument was supported by many who believed that the Court should hear the case to reinstate fair standards that promote innovation and prevent abuse of the patent system. One of Apple’s patents at issue in this case has been invalidated by courts around the world, and yet today’s decision allows Apple to unjustly profit from this patent, stunts innovation and places competition in the courtroom rather than the marketplace.
