Apple reportedly buys Israel based facial recognition firm RealFace

Apple has acquired a facial recognition firm RealFace, according to a latest report from Calcalist. This report has further strengthen rumors that Apple is looking forward to add facial recognition and other biometric features in future iPhones.

RealFace is an Israeli startup that specializes in deep learning-based face authentication technology. Founded in 2014, the startup has developed a facial recognition software that offers users a smart biometric login. The financial details of the deal are not known, however it is estimated to be at “several million dollars”.

According to promotional material on RealFace website which is down, the startup had developed a unique facial recognition technology that integrates artificial intelligence and “brings back human perception to digital processes”

Apple is tipped to add an iris scanner to iPhone 8 that will allow users to unlock the device using their eyes. The company is also expected to replace TouchID home button with ‘virtual buttons. iPhone 8 is even said to sport a fingerprint sensor that is built into the display.
