WWDC went by without a hint about any revisions to the Apple TV hardware. Now it appears that the long awaited successor will be a part of Cupertino’s annual fall event.

BuzzFeed News is reporting that the set-top box will be unveiled alongside the regular iPhone launch event in September. In terms of hardware, the device is expected to be slimmer and will have drastically refreshed internals. Apple’s A8 system on chip will power the STB and will pack a much improved remote that integrates a touch pad for input and will have a microphone for Siri based voice control.

The set top box itself should have a larger amount of built in storage to accommodate the greater amount of content you’ll be downloading. The content of course will be expanded because of the inclusion of an all new app store. The Apple TV has traditionally lacked applications altogether but this year, Apple is finally expected to introduce an SDK for its television centric device. What it will lack however is a subscription TV internet service that the company has been working on for years. That particular service will most likely be launched towards the end of the year.

The newly refreshed Apple TV is expected to be a drastically updated device that will finally be competitive with the likes of Android TV which in itself is still struggling to gain significant market traction.
