Sony starts rolling out Android 4.4 update for Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Tablet Z

Sony has started rolling out Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) update for last year’s Xperia Z lineup that includes, Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and the Xperia Tablet Z as it promised. All these devices got the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update back in December last year. Sony rolled out the KitKat update for the Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 and the Z1 Compact in March.

The Sony Xperia Z2 that was launched in India recently running Android 4.4 (KitKat) out of the box. The KitKat update brings performance tweaks, lot of under the hood improvements, new skin and new features.

New features in Android 4.4 update for Sony Xperia Z series devices

  • Tweaked Status Bar and Quick Settings – More intuitive and customisable
  • Sleek launch animation and livewallpaper across the lock and home screens similar to PlayStation 4
  • New UI adjustments in Messaging, including a new send animation, and deeper Emoji support and smileys
  • Xperia Camera apps directly accessible from your viewfinder, including personal favourite Creative Effect, and more
  • Tweaked, improved current experiences for Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID, TrackID TV, Sony Select, Smart Social Camera and more
  • Battery STAMINA Mode brings smarter data management & more for better battery life
  • Sony’s Media apps: WALKMAN, Album and Movies, with Sony Entertainment Network cloud service integration with a more intuitive UI, better download speeds, and more
  • Xperia Themes, with downloadable UI packs from Sony Select
  • Compatibility with SmartWear Experience; SmartBand SWR10 and Lifelog app

Sony announced the list of devices that would get the Android 4.4 KitKat update back in December last year. The company today announced that Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia E1 and Xperia M2 (and dual variants) would get the KitKat update starting from July. The roll out might vary across different carriers and countries. To get an idea of how KitKat would look like, check out the Android 4.4 KitKat UI demo on the Xperia Z2.
