Yahoo News Digest now available for Android, adds International Edition

Yahoo News Digest, a product of its Summly acquisition, took form as an iOS app back in January, when it debuted as a beautiful news reader with many sources. The same app is now available for Android, and it looks almost exactly like its iOS counterpart, pixel to pixel, which is a good thing because we think the app is beautiful. However, you do get a really nice home screen widget that lets you browse the feed at a glance. Previously limited only to the US and the UK, the News Digest app goes global this time around with an International Edition and another country-focused Canadian edition. Users in US, UK and Canada will all get local editions along with the International edition, which in turn will be available for all the worldwide users.

As reported earlier, this is how the app works –

Every morning and night, Yahoo News Digest delivers a summarized version of the top news, in an easy-to-navigate design. Using algorithmic and human editorial curation, each story is a collection of “atoms” — articles, maps, Wikipedia  entries, videos, and photos — that make it easy to “digest” the news quickly. The international edition is compiled by our editors in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Malaysia to offer round-the-clock updates. We then deliver a timely Digest at 8am and 6pm local time, wherever you are in the world.

The Atoms concept of handling the types of news was a novel way, and it stays the same way, with its launch on Android. A video helps make better sense of the app –

The News Digest app is the part of Yahoo’s latest mobile push, which has followed the method of specific function-focused apps rather than bundling everything into one. Recently, Yahoo updated its mail app to include a Google Now-like contextual assistant inside, which might give us a glimpse of what Yahoo is planning for its increasingly mobile future. Until then, give this app a spin, if you haven’t already, at least for its UI, which is brilliant.
