Lenovo acquires more than 3800 patents for 3G and LTE from NEC

Lenovo has announced that it has acquired a huge patent portfolio from NEC Corporation. You might have seen the NEC Medias W Android Phone with dual screens. NEC Corporation is mainly popular for providing information technology services and products in Japan. This patent portfolio has over 3,800 patent across several countries that includes patents for 3G and LTE technologies and other technologies used in several smartphones, said the company.

Lenovo is the world’s No. 1 PC maker and is currently fourth top smartphone manufacturer in the world based on shipments. Both these companies did not disclose the amount of the deal.

Regarding the new patent acquisition, Ira Blumberg, vice president of Intellectual Property, Lenovo, said,

A strong patent portfolio is a key element for success in the smartphone business. This investment strengthens Lenovo’s existing intellectual property portfolio.As Lenovo expands its mobile PC Plus business into new markets, this investment shows it is committed to having the IP we need for global success.

Lenovo bought Motorola Mobility smartphone business for $2.91 billion from Google. It recently acquired IBM’s x86 Server Business and patent portfolio from Unwired Planet. The company plans to acquire more intellectual property assets both through its own innovation and engineering and from external sources to improve its PC and mobile business.
