Among many other trends, Samsung also started this “mini” variant trend, of its single flagship device in its portfolio. The idea was to offer a small screened version of the much loved flagship, at a lesser price that everyone can afford. This trend was followed by HTC with their One mini and even Sony, with their Z1 compact, which is possibly the best implementation without compromises till date. In that line of “mini” devices, we now have our own Micromax with their “mini” version of the popular flagship – Canvas Turbo. Appropriately named the Micromax Canvas Turbo mini A200, the phone takes its screen size and the specs a notch down, to compete with devices in a different price segment. Announced some time back for a price of Rs. 14,490, how does the Canvas Turbo look and what does it bring? Lets find out in our unboxing video –

Like the Canvas Turbo and the Canvas 4, the Turbo mini too comes in a similarly designed box, that takes inspiration from none other than Apple. Micromax had stepped up its quality in box contents too, with flat wire cables, a good set of ear phones and more, but even those accessories seem to have dumbed down for the mini –

The device is very much a direct descendant from the Turbo in terms of design, as it sports the same aluminium-plastic build. However, it is not at the same levels of premium as the Canvas Turbo we initially reviewed. The micro SIM slot on the side is wonky and the volume rocker and the power lock switch do not inspire much confidence for long term wear and tear. However, the overall build quality is definitely on the higher side at this price point.
The display on the Canvas Turbo mini is a 4.69″ IPS LCD, which we would say is on the same terms as the Micromax Canvas 4’s display, which is a good feat in this price range. With good amounts of brightness and decent viewing angles, it is left to be seen if it can rival the mighty Moto G, but standalone we feel it is good enough. There is a 5 MP camera at the front, which is the same as the Canvas Turbo but when it comes to the rear, the camera is a 8 MP one.
There is a single LED flash accompanying the 720p-capable 8 MP camera, but we struggled to find a secondary microphone which means that there will be no stereo recording in video. Another thing we really liked about the build you are seeing in the above image is how light the device is. Even with a metal build, the phone is incredibly thin and light, making it possibly one of the lightest devices in this segment. Underneath the device, we have the new Mediatek MT 6582 powering the device, with graphics by Mali 400 MP. It’s a 1.3 GHz Quad Core processor that we have not seen on other devices before, so it should be interesting to see how the benchmarks fare on this one. That said, we will be indeed posting benchmarks, more videos and posts regarding the Micromax Canvas Turbo mini, and possibly compare with the Moto G which comes at the same price range.
