NVIDIA has announced GeForce GTX 1080, the company’s top-end gaming graphics card that claims to deliver 2x the performance and 3x the efficiency of TITAN X. It is based on the company’s new Pascal architecture and is built on TSMC’s 16nm FinFET process.  It has support for DirectX 12, Vulkan graphics APIs and is designed to drive display devices beyond 5K including HDR as well as delivering the performance required for immersive VR.

The new smaller chip design uses less power and emits less heat, enabling a higher core clock speed which is key for increasing performance. It is also the first GPU to support GDDR5X memory which enables higher memory bandwidth and larger memory sizes. The Pascal-based GPUs has enhanced asynchronous compute and is the first to harness the power of 8GB of Micron’s new GDDR5X memory.
