Nokia mobilizes fixed operators with convergence solutions at Broadband World Forum

Nokia mobilizes fixed operators with convergence solutions at Broadband World Forum 2005

Introducing the Nokia VoIP Server to provide IP voice service in fixed and mobile networks.

Espoo, Finland – At Broadband World Forum 2005 in Madrid, Nokia reinforces its leadership in the convergence of fixed and mobile networks with a comprehensive portfolio of solutions for operators and service providers, including the Nokia VoIP Server for IP-based voice service.

The Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) solution that Nokia is showcasing in Madrid offers fixed, mobile and hybrid operators a smooth evolution from today’s networks to the next-generation networks of tomorrow.  The end-to-end Nokia FMC solution enables wireline operators to offer new services and connectivity within the fixed network domain.  It gives subscribers the means to enjoy the same service experience independent of access, such as fixed networks, DSL, cellular or WLAN and UMA.

As a further enhancement to this strong offering, the Nokia VoIP Server widens the Nokia Unified Core Network portfolio of solutions with a carrier-grade, standards-based solution for providing voice over IP services in converged networks.  The Nokia VoIP Server is currently being trialled by a number of key operators and will be available for volume deployments in the first half 2006.

"Service providers in this changing business environment are looking for ways to increase revenue and efficiency, reduce customer churn and create a strong market position," says Jussi Ilmarinen, Director, Convergence Marketing & Sales, Networks, Nokia.  "The ubiquitous uptake of broadband services is opening new opportunities for the use of VoIP.  Fixed operators can leverage their competitive advantage by rolling out VoIP on top of broadband, while adding mobility to differentiate their offering.  They can also modernize their networks with a solution that provides a smooth evolution path to multimedia services."

"At the same time, mobile operators can implement VoIP and thereby transform their existing network and voice services into a unified offering across mobile and broadband domains," he adds  "Nokia’s Fixed-Mobile Convergence solution, including the Nokia VoIP Server, is an ideal way for operators to make the most of these emerging opportunities."

The Nokia VoIP Server is compliant with the standardization work done by 3GPP and ETSI TISPAN. This enables convergence of legacy voice and SIP-driven VoIP, independent of access.  With the Nokia VoIP Server, fixed and mobile operators can offer VoIP to their customers with supplementary services such as Caller ID and SMS text messaging.

The Nokia VoIP Server can be implemented as a stand-alone solution in fixed networks as a first step toward convergence.  Alternatively, it can also be deployed as an application server within the IMS framework.   The Nokia VoIP Server fully complements the Nokia IMS solution, which enables SIP-based multimedia services, such as video sharing, in addition to voice services and a unified communications experience using both wireless and wireline packet access networks.

Sunnyvale, CA — SanDisk and Sony Corporation today announced the development of the "Memory Stick Micro" format, an ultra-small IC recording media designed to meet the growing storage needs of highly compact, multifunctional mobile phones. Licensing for the development of "Memory Stick Micro" compatible hardware will begin October 3, 2005.

"Memory Stick Micro" media is approximately one-quarter the size of "Memory Stick PRO Duo" media, yet only about 1.2 mm thick. Dr. Eli Harari, president and chief executive officer of SanDisk Corporation, said, "Sony and SanDisk recognize the rapidly growing market opportunity for memory cards with multimedia mobile phones, and are joining forces to develop the ultra-small Memory Stick Micro format to foster development of extremely compact multimedia mobile phones."

Akira Kubota, President of Micro Systems Network Company, Sony Corporation, said, "Sony’s collaboration with SanDisk Corporation has continued to develop since our initial announcement of the joint Memory Stick PRO format development in 2003. Today’s joint announcement of the Memory Stick Micro format provides a new, versatile IC recording media for mobile products such as mobile phones for sharing entertainment and data."

Hutch rolls out Rs 10 recharge coupons

Hutchison Essar has launched a new recharge voucher that enables subscribers to top-up pre-paid connections with denominations as low as Rs 10

Hutchison Essar has launched a new recharge voucher that enables subscribers to top-up pre-paid connections with denominations as low as Rs 10.

“The new coupon will help make pre-paid usage even more affordable to both ‘Hutch’ and ‘Orange’ users, and offers more talktime at the same cost, therefore more value for money,” said Naveen Chopra, corporate vice-present, group marketing of Hutchison Essar at a press conference.

Earlier, the voucher could be used only as an ‘add-on card’. This meant that the card can be used to make calls when the recharged value of a coupon expires, but the validity period continues.

The customer can then recharge using a Chota Recharge again after buying a Rs 199 card within the 30-day validity period. Even though, the customer gets additional talktime for the amount recharged, it does not extend his validity period.

A user can recharge any number of times within the validity period without paying any extra fee. This will bring in a significant change in the pre-paid industry and going mobile will become more affordable, he said.

With this launch, Chota Recharge becomes the lowest recharge voucher available in the country.

Prior to this launch, the add-on recharge card available with the Rs 199 voucher was of Rs 55 and Rs 60. These cards also had access fees. Earlier, Airtel had also rolled out recharge vouchers in low denominations of Rs 60 and Rs 120.

Sony Ericsson Introduces Bluetooth Auto-Pairing Devices

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications today announced the introduction of Auto pairing, a unique proprietary solution, that makes it quicker and easier to connect Bluetooth equipped headsets to Sony Ericsson mobile phones. The company demonstrated this new functionality at a press event arranged by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group in Stockholm today.

When the phone and headset are in close proximity and the Bluetooth function is turned on, the Auto pairing equipped Bluetooth headset automatically searches and finds the user’s Bluetooth enabled Sony Ericsson mobile phone. The user only has to confirm the connection for the device pairing to be initiated and doesn’t have to use a PIN code to authorize the connection.

The new feature has been developed through close cooperation within Sony Ericsson between the design and development of mobile phones and headsets in order to create a more integrated and seamless user experience that eliminates the necessity of physical PIN in-put. Auto pairing will be implemented first in an updated version of the Bluetooth Headset HBH-610, called HBH-610a.

"Sony Ericsson continually strives to enhance the user experience, making it easy and intuitive so the technology platform supporting the device fades into the background and the user just enjoys the benefits and convenience of well designed products. Auto pairing is a great example of how we as a company continue to enhance consumer benefits by making our products easy to use straight out of the box." says Rikard Nilsson, Global Marketing Manager, Product Business Unit Accessories.

Auto pairing will only be available in Sony Ericsson mobile phones and headsets. However, Sony Ericsson Bluetooth headsets will continue to be compatible with Bluetooth-equipped mobile phones from other phone brands by following the regular procedure for device pairing when Auto pairing is not available.

The first Sony Ericsson Bluetooth headset with Auto pairing device connectivity, the HBH-610a, will be available in Q4, 2005.
