Google Fitbit Edge with 1.34″ AMOLED display, GPS announced

Google has announced the Fitbit Edge, a fitness tracker designed to bridge the gap between lightweight screenless bands and smartwatches. The device introduces Google Health Coach integration alongside an updated hardware design, improved sensor suite, and modular internal construction.

Hardware and Display Design

The Fitbit Edge features an aluminum housing measuring 39.22 mm by 25.56 mm across the face and 11.58 mm in thickness. Without a band, the unit weighs 17.7 grams.

The front of the tracker houses a 1.34-inch (34 mm) color AMOLED display with always-on capabilities, delivering 46% more viewing area than previous-generation Fitbit trackers. To support navigation alongside touch input, Google added a physical mechanical side button to provide tactile control during activities, such as pausing or resuming workouts.

The enclosure is rated 5 ATM and IP68 for water and dust resistance, enabling use during swimming down to 50 meters. Google has also incorporated a modular internal architecture with a replaceable 65 mAh lithium-ion battery, marking the company’s first repairable fitness tracker design.

Activity and Location Tracking

Under the hood, the device runs on an Ambiq AP5 microcontroller paired with 64 MB of NOR flash storage, retaining minute-by-minute motion data for seven days and daily totals for 30 days.

  • Independent GNSS: Integrated GPS and Galileo support route tracking without a connected phone. Google states that nano-molded antenna integration within the aluminum body improves location accuracy by up to 40% over prior models.
  • Exercise Metrics: The device supports automated activity recognition and manual tracking across more than 40 sport modes. An onboard altimeter calculates elevation changes during trail runs, hill workouts, and stair climbs.
  • Performance Analysis: The system tracks Cardio Load, Daily Readiness, VO2 Max, Active Zone Minutes, and heart rate broadcasting to compatible gym equipment.
Biometrics and Health Monitoring

Biometric tracking relies on an array of optical, thermal, and electrical sensors. The optical PPG monitor logs 24/7 resting heart rate at two-second intervals, alerting users to abnormal high or low thresholds.

  • Cardiac Monitoring: Users can take on-demand electrocardiograms using the on-wrist ECG app to detect signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib), alongside background irregular heart rhythm notifications.
  • Overnight Recovery: Sleep stage analysis is combined with blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate variability (HRV), and a dedicated far-field skin temperature sensor.
  • Health Guardian: The platform tracks long-term shifts in physiological baselines, including monthly blood pressure trends and estimated insulin resistance markers, which are contextualized within the Google Health app.
Everyday Utility and Battery Performance

Connected via Bluetooth 5.4, the Edge mirrors smartphone notifications, supports quick text replies (on compatible platforms), and provides media playback controls, alarms, timers, and basic Google Maps guidance.

The 65 mAh battery delivers up to seven days of runtime on a full charge. A magnetic fast-charging interface restores up to 24 hours of standard use in five minutes, with a complete recharge requiring approximately 90 minutes.

Pricing and Availability

The standard Google Fitbit Edge is priced at $179.99 (Rs. 17,200 approx.) and includes small and large silicone Active Bands. It is offered in four colorways:

  • Matte Black Aluminum with an Obsidian band
  • Satin Silver Aluminum with a Fog band
  • Satin Pyrite Aluminum with an Olive band
