Samsung Electronics has announced that Prime Video will become the first streaming service to support HDR10+ ADVANCED on select titles globally beginning August 2026. The new format will initially be available on Samsung’s 2026 TV lineup, marking the latest update to the open-source High Dynamic Range (HDR) ecosystem.
Evolution of the HDR10+ Standard
HDR10+ ADVANCED represents the next iteration of the HDR10+ standard, originally launched in 2017. Developed to accommodate modern display hardware—characterized by larger screen sizes, higher peak brightness, expanded color volume, and increased processing power—the new standard is designed to optimize picture quality while maintaining creator intent across varying display capabilities.
Since the original HDR10+ deployment on Prime Video in December 2017, the HDR10+ ecosystem has expanded to include over 183 adopter companies and more than 22,000 certified devices globally.
Key Technical Features
The HDR10+ ADVANCED specification introduces two primary updates to dynamic metadata processing:
- Enhanced Overall Brightness: By utilizing extended statistical metadata, the format allows compatible displays to utilize higher peak luminance capabilities across the full tonal range, improving highlight precision and mid-tone clarity.
- Intelligent Motion Smoothing: Using scene-by-scene frame analysis, compatible displays can dynamically adjust motion handling parameters. This feature aims to preserve native frame rates for film content while applying targeted processing to fast-moving media, such as live sports and action sequences.
Additionally, integrated AI tone mapping works within the standard to adjust dynamic range in real time, aiming to retain shadow detail in low-light scenes while boosting luminance for high-energy content.
Implementation and Availability
Rollout of HDR10+ ADVANCED will begin with Samsung’s 2026 TV models, with plans to expand support to future hardware categories as adoption grows. Prime Video users with supported 2026 displays will receive automatic access to the enhanced format on compatible library titles starting in August 2026.
