Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced the integration of Silent Mobile Verification (SMV) capabilities across Meta platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. The network-based authentication technology is designed to provide password-less digital experiences for Vi subscribers using these applications.
SMV is a secure authentication method that verifies a user’s mobile identity in the background. It eliminates the need for manual credential entry, application switching, or waiting for One-Time Password (OTP) messages. When a subscriber accesses WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram via the Vi mobile network, the verification request is validated directly through the telecom network infrastructure to streamline the user experience.
According to the announcement, Vi users will encounter SMV-supported workflows during several digital touchpoints, including:
- New user registration
- Mobile number verification
- Account login and re-login
- Account recovery
- Security check authentications
By reducing manual steps, the technology aims to accelerate user onboarding while offering enhanced protection against phishing and digital identity risks.
The launch occurs amid a broader push by Indian government initiatives and industry stakeholders to strengthen fraud prevention and establish trusted authentication frameworks. The deployment represents an evolution in telecom network Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and digital infrastructure within the region.
Moving forward, Vi plans to collaborate with developers, platforms, and ecosystem partners to expand these secure network capabilities. The telecom operator intends to roll out SMV and advanced trust-based solutions across additional third-party applications, focusing on enhanced authentication, fraud prevention, and risk-based verification systems.
Commenting on the launch, Abhijit Kishore, CEO, Vodafone Idea Limited, said:
Telecom networks are increasingly playing an important role in enabling safer digital experiences. With millions of consumers relying on Vi’s secure telecom network every day, we can build these experiences on a scale. Through our partnership with Meta, we are enabling SMV capabilities that enhance cyber safety and reduce fraud risks, while creating seamless authentication experiences for users across some of the country’s most widely used digital platforms.
Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta in India, said:
Bringing Network-based authentication is a critical step forward in making verification simpler, seamless and more secure for users across our platforms. We’re pleased to work with Vi to bring this capability to their subscribers using WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram.
