Microsoft introduces new Surface Pro for Business and Surface Laptop for Business

Microsoft has introduced its next-generation Surface for Business portfolio, introducing the new Surface Pro for Business and Surface Laptop for Business.

Powered by Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors, these commercial devices are now available in select markets, aimed at accelerating corporate productivity through enhanced edge AI capabilities and upgraded hardware architecture.

Later this year, the company plans to expand the line further by offering models equipped with Snapdragon X2 processors to provide alternative hardware options for local AI processing and battery efficiency.

Performance and Hardware Specifications

The deployment of Intel’s next-generation Core Ultra Series 3 architecture introduces notable performance benchmarks across the updated portfolio. According to Microsoft:

  • Graphics Capabilities: Select configurations utilizing the Intel Core Ultra X7 chip deliver a 35% increase in graphics performance compared to the MacBook Air with M5, alongside a 90% speed improvement over the previous-generation Surface Laptop 5.
  • Processing and Productivity: The integration of the Core Ultra Series 3 GPU is engineered to sustain fluid workloads for complex data analysis, content creation, and real-time presentations without compromising device mobility.

The 13-inch model is positioned as an entry-premium ultraportable featuring Wi-Fi 7 and a removable Gen 4 SSD to facilitate enterprise serviceability.

Meanwhile, the larger 13.8-inch and 15-inch versions target traditional knowledge workers, offering up to 23 hours of battery life and an optional integrated privacy screen on select 13.8-inch models.

Chip-to-Cloud Security and Firmware Innovations

Microsoft’s hardware design principles emphasize built-in security, shipping each device as a Secured-core PC to ensure integrated chip-to-cloud protection aligned with the Microsoft security stack.

[Hardware-Based Protection] ➔ [Rust-Based Drivers & Open-Source Project Mu/ODP UEFI] ➔ [Windows Update Delivery]

Key security implementations include:

  • Memory-Safe Firmware: Surface is the first commercial PC portfolio built using Rust-based drivers and a secure embedded controller rooted in hardware protection via open-source Project Mu and Open Device Partnership (ODP) UEFI, directly targeting persistent firmware vulnerabilities.
  • Integrated Privacy Screen: For the first time, select 13.8-inch Surface Laptop configurations feature a software-driven, anti-glare visual privacy filter. It can be toggled instantly via a single keystroke or managed centrally by IT administrators to block unauthorized viewing without requiring physical third-party screen filters.
  • Streamlined Maintenance: All firmware updates are deployed directly through Windows Update, removing third-party deployment complexity.
Ergonomics, Sustainability, and Repairability

The physical design of the hardware retains its enterprise-focused features while adopting more stringent environmental standards.

  • Productivity Displays: The devices feature a signature 3:2 aspect ratio display to maximize vertical screen real estate for side-by-side documentation, coated with anti-reflective technology to minimize eye strain.
  • Advanced Haptics: The Surface Laptop includes tactile feedback mechanisms within the touchpad to provide precise physical responses for navigation gestures like window snapping and dragging.
  • Sustainability Metrics: The enclosures for the 13.8-inch and 15-inch Laptops, alongside the 13-inch Pro, are manufactured using 100% recycled aluminum. The devices are ENERGY STAR certified, exceeding baseline efficiency requirements by at least 45%, and include an Automatic Keyboard Backlight setting to manage power consumption.
  • Lifecycle Repairability: To reduce electronic waste and maximize hardware lifespans, nearly every major component across the portfolio is replaceable. Microsoft has established a dedicated parts supply chain for IT teams, utilizing reduced adhesives and clear internal visual wayfinding guides so that technicians can perform standard repairs using common tools.
